We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Call and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business, I was a stay-at-home mom. I wanted to find a way in which I could financially assist my family. I had never really thought about becoming a photographer as I thought the only photographers out there either worked for National Geographic or for the JCPenney studio. I never realized that photography was a career that I could get into locally until I got my first camera and started taking pictures of my kids, and one of my friends made a comment saying “your photos are amazing. You should do this as a living“. Well, that got me thinking and I started doing research and looking at photography and a completely different light. I started watching as many videos as I could reading as many books as I could Learning from as many of well-known professional photographers as I could and then I also went to college

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a boudoir photographer. I did not start in budoir. I started doing everything and anything like most other photographers do through my learning process and schooling and experience. I was able to work with a variety of different people. I had originally started wanting to become a pet and equine Photographer. One day during college, I decided to step outside the box outside my comfort zone and try a boudoir shoot and absolutely fell in love with it. I’ve learned many lessons about being in the photography business and being a business owner in general over the years, and I feel that I will never stop learning. Of course, there have been challenges and there always will be here. The biggest one is finding clients and getting your name out there so people know that your business exists. I have moved several times since I started my business so that has been the biggest challenge for me essentially having to restart my business multiple times from scratch in many places. So even though I’ve been a Photographer for 12 years I feel like I’m still new because of how many times I’ve had to restart. I specialize in boudoir photography for humans whether you are male or female, gender neutral. The reason behind what I do is to help others to feel empowered, confident, beautiful, handsome, sexy, and to learn to love themselves in their skin. They’re in right now. To see themselves, just as everyone else sees them. It is the most amazing feeling to watch each, and every one of my clients opens up throughout their session and really become who they are, and to see the light bulb go off and to watch them start to laugh and enjoy themselves and get outside of their head and negative thoughts. That’s why I do what I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, living in Arizona, we have so much to offer people. Growing up I love to tell people I was from Arizona and see their reactions of them. Oh, saying you lived in a desert I didn’t realize people even lived there. So of course I would take them to some of my favorite places in the state. We would go up north, and do some hiking in Sedona. We would go to Cottonwood to one of the wineries one evening. We would go up to Payson to the Christopher Creek area and up to Woods Canyon Lake to do some paddle boarding. Then up to Flagstaff one day to visit all the cute little shops up there and probably take another hike in the trees. I love to get away to the northern part of Arizona because I absolutely love all the green. It is my happy place. It is where I can really unwind and feel stress-free.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shout out to all my amazing friends, my tribe, who have always supported me through the ups and downs. I also want to thank myself for having the courage to not give up, even though this is one of the toughest industries to make a living in.
