We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
If you’d asked me when I was younger if I’d ever thought to have a business of my own, I would have told you no. In fact, I went to school for massage therapy, but was so scared of having my own business that I completed everything except getting my license. That all changed when I had my twin girls. There I was, climbing the corporate ladder, kicking ass, taking names and doing a fantastic job at taking care of my team when suddenly my entire world was flipped upside down. I was nearing the end of my maternity leave, staring down the barrel of having a one-income household because my husband was coming home to take care of the girls, and I knew I needed to do something more.
I started Googling, “how to make money from home… legitimately…” and I came across a blog post sharing about different courses that teach you how to be a virtual assistant. I set up my business, did all the things, and finally realized that I am passionate about podcasters and podcasts. Hence why I now run a boutique podcast management company designed to support professionals turned entrepreneur.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Things have been an absolutely whirlwind in my professional life. I’m definitely a multi-passionate person. I love anything that requires strategic thinking and problem solving (seriously, give me a thousand piece puzzle in varying shades of green and I’m a happy person!) but I also like to get my hands dirty learning new skills. Which is why I loved working in the insurance industry and what I’ve brought over into my business. You wouldn’t believe how much the corporate world and the entrepreneurial world really intersect unless you’ve traveled the roads of both.
I think what I’m most proud of in all of it is my desire to continue to learn, grow, and build. I don’t stick with the status quo just because that’s what’s always been done. Rather I’m constantly trying to be and do better. It’s a mindset that I’ve had since I was little and it’s served me very well both personally and professionally. Each new challenge that presents itself causes me to take stock of what’s best for myself and my family and then going for it.
KWells Companies, LLC. was built out of a desire to give me my time back to be with my family through sharing and elevating a true passion of mine, podcasting. I fully believe that podcasting is one of the best ways to share your message, increase your authority, and reach your ideal clients and customers. (If of course you’re a person who likes to “talk” about your thing… some people prefer to write out their message… blog on my friends!)
But my company wouldn’t be where it is without my willingness to learn and grow within myself and my skills!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since it’s fall and one of the best times to be in Texas, we’d be heading outside. Getting back to my area from DFW take a little under an hour but once you’re out of the hustle and bustle of the city it’s so worth it. We’d go to one of my favorite disc golf courses, shoot some discs, and then head out for some amazing Tex-Mex… or steaks… or Babe’s… or well we’d eat some amazing food. There’s a lot to be had.
Another favorite past time of mine during these months is going out to Six Flags. It’s not hot hot hot like it is in summer and you can actually enjoy the park. Plus they decorate the whole park for the season which is so much fun.
Last but not least we’d have to hit Mainstays Farm. They have rides and attractions and a petting zoo and so many fun things for the kids to do.
If it were to be raining then we’d take one of those outside days and head over to the Fort Worth Arboretum. The flowers are so beautiful this time of year and it’s always fun to take a nice leisurely walk through the area! (Plus, 7th street in Fort Worth has some AMAZING food!)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today without the support of SO many people. Not the least of which are my amazing clients, business besties, and my family. Clients like Jenn Bays, owner of Success Beyond the Lens, and Errin Weisman of Doctor Me First who took a chance on me and have me, my skills, and business grow alongside them and theirs. Sid Meadows of The Trend Report too. He decided to go all in on his podcast and chose me to help him do it. I’m honored to call them clients and friends.
My business besties have kept me on track when I’ve felt like jumping off the train completely. Marylin De La Hoz, Chamel Evans, Mallory Majcher, Amy Lockrin, Becky Burgess, Jenn Bays (again), and so many more have spent their time and energy pouring into me, my business, and referring me clients and I appreciate them so much.
Last but not least my husband Joshua, mom, Jeannie and my sister-from-another-mister Robbie Wilson have been necessary for not only my business growth but also my sanity. My husband never bats an eye when I tell him about my new crazy ideas. He has supported my decisions from day one and has always had faith in me and my ability to be sure our family stays stable. My mom helps on all fronts of my business and my personal life. She’s there for me at every turn and it sometimes feel like I couldn’t do life with out her. Robbie has supported me through all of my cray-cray ideas and has been there to help me make them happen.
As I sit here writing all this, I really just have so many people to thank and congratulate. I love doing this life and business thing with these amazing people and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
