We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Proffitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve been a writer my entire life. I went to school to get a journalism degree, and I loved every second of it. I love working for newspapers (specifically feature pieces) and I love sharing stories with the world. Recently, I was working for this little mommy blog-esque magazine and I was able to learn so much about SEO, blog writing, and using WordPress. So, I suddenly got fired from this job, with no warning or notice and I realized that I could do it myself… and probably better. That same night, I created my own website, social media accounts and came up with the concept of “The Zillennial.” The Z is a place for people who feel like they are in between the Millennial and Gen Z generations like I always have. We remember 90s tv shows, but we’re on TikTok, too. We grew up playing with Tamagotchis and Furbys, but we also Wiis. We’re this weird in-the-middle grey zone and I thought there needed to be a place for us. So, I made one. https://thezillennialzine.com/
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m so proud of the way we jumped into this project one month ago and have already a little following behind us. Every day, our Pinterest monthly views skyrocket, and we get new Instagram followers and new readers. Don’t just sit around and wait for an opportunity, just make one. This amazing magazine was just started on a whirlwind. We’re making it up as we go and loving every single minute of it. We are so thankful for every single person who has clicked onto our website and has given it a read! We hope to be “the zine for the in between” for a very, very long time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Flagstaff is such a unique little city and I’m so thankful I’ve been able to live here for the past few years. It is NOTHING like Phoenix (where I grew up). Flagstaff has beautiful hikes, places to hammock, amazing family owned restaurants and businesses, and it also has a great nightlife. Being in a college town like this, there is so much to do! I’d take my friends on an awesome hike, to an amazing restaurant like MartAnne’s and then we’d head downtown for somefun! We’d hit all of the bars and have a great night!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many amazing people who have supported me these past few years. My parents support everything I do and I appreciate them so much. My fiance will proofread every single one of my stories if he has to and never complains, he is my light, my laughter, and my love. But when it comes to the Zillennial, there is one main person I NEED to give a huge credit and thanks to. My bestie Ash Lohmann will literally jump on board with any crazy idea I have. The second I came up with the Z, I texted her and she was so excited to embark on this journey with me. She does so much for the magazine and I would not be able to run it without her. She’s incredibly talented, the best friend you could ever ask for, and is so on top of EVERYTHING. I owe her so much for spending so much time, energy, and love on our little online magazine. She’s the soul behind it.
