We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Braband and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ken, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I started Liquid Adventuring eight years ago as a way to share my love for the outdoors, especially through kayaking. The rapid growth of paddling sports in recent years has encouraged many people to take part, which is great. Unfortunately, too many of them do so without recognizing the risks that often accompany the rewards. That’s why, over the years I have kept my instructor certifications and industry knowledge up-to-date with recognized best practices. I also extend my outreach to paddlers by including safety education messaging in my social media — always trying to use a caring voice to let people know there’s more to kayaking than plopping their rear ends into a $200 kayak purchased at a big box retail store. I like to think I helped save a life or two along the way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After brief stints as a newspaper reporter followed by creative director, I spend most of my career as a freelance writer. It wasn’t always easy raising a family and not knowing when the next project would come in. However, I was able to grow a strong business, thanks to a handful of loyal clients. Along the way I learned to trust my instincts, always deliver more than expected, and never take a client for granted.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a kayak instructor, my interest naturally flows toward paddling, so that’s where I would want to take visiting friends if they shared that interest. My best friends are kayakers because we share a love of the outdoors and the excitement of mastering new skills.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have volunteered with Team River Runner for many years. This outstanding national organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that gives active duty service members and veterans an opportunity to find health, healing, and new challenges through whitewater kayaking and other paddle sports.
