We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Lavander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monica, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Our social impact is focused on inclusivity and creating opportunities for people to express themselves freely. This means uplifting other artists and people in the community by offering booking opportunities, recording space, event consulting, and more. This year we are working towards expanding and teaching art & music classes at different rehabilitation centers in the valley. We are currently working with Villament and are establishing a music and arts program within their organization. We believe mental health and art go hand in hand. In pursuit of this, we have been working with Villament on how we can help more people in the community and at their care facility.

Within the music world we are offering spaces for artist to express themselves; which involves a wide range of events and booking opportunities. Currently Herizon has a DJ residency at Wren & Wolf; a craft cocktail bar and chef driven kitchen in downtown Phoenix.

Herizon was built on collaboration and local support. We intend to uphold that by continuing to work with other local businesses and organizations that share our vision. We are motivated to bring artists together to expand our individual expressions.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Herizon is a feminine empowered collective based out of Phoenix, Arizona. We are an artist power house; from visual arts, painters, DJ’s, musicians, producers, dancers, vendors, the list goes on! Herizon’s focus is on providing proper representation for women in the arts and music industries. Which includes a range of but not limited to; providing production knowledge/resources, opportunities, and creating a safe space for all to express themselves freely. We strive to do this by connecting artists and creating a memorable experience for people through our artistic expressions. Although our focus is on promoting women, equal representation is very important to us.
We are dedicated to our crafts and our individuality as artists. Which means we are a collective that is open to all genres of music, all types of art mediums, and all of it is welcome! We believe this is ultimately what sets Herizon apart from other collectives, being that we are not genre specific. We intend to celebrate the individual and meet them where they are at. Come as you are and grow at your pace!
We wouldn’t say it was easy starting this collective, considering the other tasks and responsibilities going on in our daily lives. Although, there is power in women supporting each other and that’s just what happens when you get us all into a room; that part comes easy.
One of the main lessons we’ve learned, in this is the necessity of planning ahead, but also the importance of staying present. This comes down to healthy communication. We strive to focus on uplifting the divine feminine and helping the community grow in the process. We are always looking forward to progression, but nonetheless we have learned to find balance in the process.
Our goal is to always lead with love and respect in order to overcome any challenges we face. We work together as a unit to bring our ideas to light by tactfully taking action to lead us to a new Herizon, together.
Herizon’s motive to uplift one another is a lifestyle and our growth is a daily practice.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we are out near 2nd st. and Roosevelt we would go to Cobra Arcade Bar for House Mondays; CHKLZ hosts every Monday and its always a good vibe. Maybe play some arcade games and listen to local house DJ’s. We love a good gaming bar to change things up! Right up the road is Sazerac and World Class Wednesdays is one of my favorite weekly spots, Jesse James Jensen has such a unique style and never disappoints.
On a night out during the weekend in downtown, we would stop by Wren & Wolf where Herizon hosts a DJ residence every Friday & Saturday 6-12am. The food at Wren is chef driven and the atmosphere is equally as cared for; they really put time into every detail.
If it’s First Friday we are headed to Snood City Neon Shop down near Grand Ave. Snood City organizes a First Friday gathering which has all sorts of flow artists doing their thing. There’s so much to explore downtown; the music, art, and food makes it hard to chose, especially on a Friday night!
We could walk up and down grand and 7th ave just to look at the murals that are spread across the city. It’s one of my favorite things to do and every so often you find a new one pop up. Phoenix really does has a variety of places for artists to thrive and hold space for each other to express themselves.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few names we would like to recognize that have had an influence in the creation of Herizon. We are largely inspired by these individuals’ social impact and devotion to the community. We would like to dedicate our shoutout to Synesthesia and Villament as well as mentors Jermaine and Mrs. Lavander. This past Thanksgiving we collaborated with Synesthesia for Synsgiving – a 24 hour live stream featuring local collectives to give back to St. Mary’s Food Bank. Matt’s inclusivity behind Synesthesia and communal effort to give back is always inspiring.
Another influence of ours has been Jermaine and Villament (VM) ; Jermaine’s work ethic and love behind the non-profit that he built is unmatched. His guidance in many ways shaped and taught us what it truly looks like to give back to your community and uplift those around you.
As for my gracious Mother; she is a 3rd grade teacher and has made an impact in the community throughout her 20 years of teaching. Her devotion to the youth and their families is truly admirable and she will always be my biggest supporter.
We strive to elevate and unify the community like our influencers have to continue cultivating positive change.
