We had the good fortune of connecting with Khiana Oakes & Santrese Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khiana Oakes &, how does your business help the community?
There is no question that there is a significant wealth gap between African Americans and other races in the US. Support Black AZ is dedicated to promoting black businesses, professionals and creatives with the hopes of helping close the wealth gap. We do this through marketing via social media and our online directory.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In May of 2020 we began to have a strong desire to connect with the black business community in the valley. We then realized that it was difficult to find businesses to support. We had a vision to create a platform that highlights all Black-owned businesses. Once we began our research we were overjoyed to find that there are hundreds of black creatives, artists, business owners, restaurants and professionals.

We say all the time that we are shocked to have the following we have now after only a little over a year. We expected it to be more difficult to find businesses but social media made it easier to make connections within the community.

We’ve come across a lot of lessons along the way. From learning to work with and communicate effectively with each other as business partners, to branding, to operational business functions but it’s all been worth the learning experience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If our best friend was coming to visit we’d do these things: Hike Camelback
Facials at Sparkle N Shine
Poetic Soul Wednesday night in Phoenix
Day trip to Sedona
Food Truck Friday in Chandler
Black Rodeo
Melanin Market Sunday
Facials at Sparkle N Shine

Visit these restaurants:
Brunch N Sip
Breakfast Bitch
Trap Haus BBQ

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Support Black Az would not be where it is today without our family & friends. All of their support has been a huge part of our growth. Their referrals, sharing out content, donations, purchasing our merchandise and volunteering their time and effort in multiple projects has not gone unnoticed! We’re beyond grateful for the people in our lives.
