Meet Kim Alexis | Super Model

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Alexis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I was still in high school, I enrolled into college like everyone else. I thought my life path was set. Out of the blue, I got offered to go to NYC to try modeling with the trip artists and designers in the Fashion Capital of the world. I could have said no and stayed on my path, graduating college and starting a career in Pharmacy but I decided to take a chance or risk and try something totally new. Modeling was a business I knew nothing about. I had been a tomboy choosing to spend my time working out rather than pouring over magazines looking at the latest fashion, so this was a big jump for me into new territory. I moved to NYC at 18 and started a new career while living alone in New York. I had family to call but mainly I was alone to make career decisions on my own.
Modeling was done around age 25 so I stepped out and started to work in the broadcasting field. I was a fitness correspondent in Jacksonville Fl as it helped bring awareness to my 2 health clubs I owned at the time. Someone in NY saw my tape, sent it to GMA and I got called in for a meeting. I was offered a spot at the Fashion Correspondent for Good Morning America at that meeting. After telling them I would try it, I was told I was LIVE on the air the next morning. I spent three years there learning the business from the best then moved onto the speaking circuit, learning a new craft once again.
I would never be where I am today without stepping out and trying new things when opportunities came up. Risk is important. Part of that risk taking came from my parents who always told me I could do whatever I put my mind to. And I am not done yet! I am developing new projects producing two tv shows, developing a curriculum for a jail ministry as well as writing new books and a columnist for magazines on health and a healthy lifestyle.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At a young age, I learned that my face and body became an art canvas for others. I was still finding out who I was as a person at 18, when I started in the modeling business in New York City. To work everyday with people “altering” my face and body with makeup and clothing was great in one way as it taught me what worked and what didnt work but to have so many opinions from top artists that were different from each other, was hard for me to decipher. When I wasn’t on set, I either rebelled from designer clothing by walking around in jeans and no makeup or I dressed up and “decked out” for a night on the town by appearing at Studio 54.
There were many opinions about my “look” and rejection was a huge part of the modeling world so I had to take what others said about me, weigh each comment and then decide if they were right or if their opinion didnt matter to me.
I was offered numerous and multiple jobs daily and at a young age, had to start protecting my brand. Back then in the late 70’s, brand wasn’t really a term used for people so I didnt realize what I was doing. I just knew that some products were better for others to do and some situations were not right for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I assume we are talking about Scottsdale now. I live a very low key life here. I love the outdoors and the state of Arizona has some wonderful and unique places to visit. Since I moved here from New York City 7 years ago, my husband has given me a tour of numerous places around the state. Of course, the Grand Canyon was a big deal to go see. I love the vastness and the colors of the rocks. It creates an awe when seen that many other places in the country dont have. We also found some great hikes both in Scottsdale and also by driving 2 hours to get to the trailhead. I carry a book of favorite hiking spots in Arizona as I am always trying new ones with my husband. There is a lot to explore here and each place has its own specialness. We dont mind driving at all to fun places and can decide early on a Saturday morning to jump in the car and be off on a new adventure in 10 minutes.
Food is important and I love a good steak or even a mega burger after a day outside hiking. For me it is important to “deserve” a big calorie meal and the hearty appetite makes the food much more appreciated. Rehab Burger is one of my go to’s for great, big burgers and Steak 44 for a good steak. We also love a pizza and have a spot we frequent called Crust Simply Italian.
We also love the art fairs which will be popping up around our area now that the weather is cooler. We have many different items purchased from them and love to put them in the yard. We bought an old airplane door that hangs on a back wall and the tail of a helicopter at Junk in the Trunk. Fun stuff you dont find in many places.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents and friends and family.
