We had the good fortune of connecting with Krista Manus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krista, what are you most proud of in terms of your business?
Early on it was proving people wrong. It’s probably a little cliche, but when I first started considering my business someone told me that I couldn’t make a living/have a full-time business shooting only boudoir. That has always been stuck in my head and I wanted to prove them wrong. It’s been a long road (6+ years!) with a lot of ups/downs, tears, and laughter but I can look back and say that I build something amazing. Now its hearing the excitement of my clients when they see their art; hearing how much their significant other loved their gift; hearing how amazing they felt after a session. Those emotions keep me going and make me want to keep improving and delivering amazing art for amazing women.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started Unleashed Boudoir about 7 years ago and it has grown into an amazing venture. We are the only full-service, all-female boudoir-only photography studio in Southern Arizona. We tend to be more of a darker/moodier style that can dance the line between sensual and sexy. You won’t find a ton of smiles in our work and it isn’t typically light, bright, and airy. Nothing about owning your own business is really “easy”. It is a great wakeup call to learning your strengths/weaknesses and most importantly learning to delegate and give up control of things you don’t find joy in or things you just aren’t that good at. That’s probably been my biggest lesson/takeaway from the business side of things. On the people side, you have to grow a thick skin. You aren’t the right person for everyone and you can’t make everyone like you. Still learning that one!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely depends on when they were here! But we’d check out some Tucson favorites – El Charro, Guadalajara Grill (the original!). A trip downtown to enjoy some libations at 1055 Brewing, Revel Wine Bar. If we were heading outside, one of my favorite places to do a quick walk is Maeveen Behan Desert Sanctuary. It’s nearby and easy for all. I’d probably ‘torture’ my visitors by dragging them to a pole class at Kinetic Arts – or one of their regular showcases.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to all the amazing boudoir photographers before me and especially to Jenn, Humberto and Alex!
