We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura-Lynn Petrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura-Lynn, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From a young age, I always knew I wanted to create images. I was fascinated with film, television and fashion. I loved to look through old photographs and absorb the emotion and storytelling behind each.
I dove in head first and started photographing and documenting my surroundings. It’s been nearly 15 years now, and I’m still doing it. The comfortable times you feel like you’re on top of the world, and the rocky times create the most interesting work. I’m so grateful to be doing what I love everyday and can happily pursue my passions. It’s a rewarding lifestyle – you meet creative and like-minded people, you see your work being enjoyed by audiences, and most importantly you get to capture the beauty around you.
I couldn’t imagine doing a 9-5 or working in any other field then the arts.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a film photographer & cinematographer. I direct films and music videos as well. Jack of all trades so to speak. I come from the early social media era – I started blogging my photos in the mid 2000’s, photographing youth culture in my hometown and Toronto, then gradually was immersed in the music scene and started documenting musicians live and on tour. Through my desire to capture more of the liveliness of my experiences, I began shooting video & then kind of fell into making music videos for many different artists.
I’m very proud of my evolution & that I can do what I love, professionally. I’m in awe that I’ve been published in some of my favourite magazines from my youth – Rolling Stone, Billboard, Interview & Russsh…. I’m so grateful to be working with some very talented musicians and to have a large variety of my work out there in the world.
This profession is always an uphill climb. The industries are always changing, technology is always upgrading. It’s difficult to stay on top of it all. Especially when you’re used to shooting in a nostalgic manner.
Freelancing always has its challenges. The work comes in waves. I think the best thing you can do for yourself is stay busy, make creative work, work with people you admire & respect, and continue to put yourself out there. Be fearless. Be persistent. Believe in yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
