Meet Lauren Nelson | Office Manager & Marketing Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, what is the most important factor behind your success?
At My Pet Market we know that the most important factor behind our success is our employees. Customer service is our number one priority, but because of nature of our business (pet health and needs) our customer service needs to go beyond the typical helpful employee with a good attitude and a smile. Our employees are incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to pet products. They know the benefits of each type of diet (frozen raw, wet food, dry food, etc.), treat, supplement, or toy. They know what the ingredients are and why they are beneficial. They understand the guaranteed analysis on every package of food. Our employees take the time to listen to our customers and help them find the right product for their individual pet’s needs. They genuinely care and want to help the pet. Without our employees dedication, care, and product knowledge we would not have become as successful as we are.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My Pet Market is a family-owned, independent pet store specializing in natural and holistic foods for dogs, cats, birds, and small animals. We have a highly trained staff to provide you with all the information you might need to keep your pet healthy and happy based on your pet’s individual needs. This genuine care for our customers and their pets is what has helped us grow and sets us apart from big box retailers and online sites.
In addition to that, we are incredibly community focused, so whether you need advice from us, or just a recommendation for a local groomer, vet, daycare, etc. – we’ve got you covered. We even host local rescues on the weekends to help animals find their forever homes! The Rescue Me program we’ve set up for local rescues is incredible and we’ve donated over $100,000 to date to programs and animals in need around the Valley.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m originally from Chicago, so when my friends come out to visit I like to show them a little bit of everything. Being from Chicago I know good food, and Cornish Pasty in Oldtown Scottsdale, Throne Brewing in Glendale, and Pomodoro in Cave Creek are three of my favorite places to bring people. The food, the drinks, the service, and the experience are always fantastic.
Of course hitting some of the local trails around Camelback and Superstition are a must, and if we have the time I enjoy bringing people up to the Mongollon Rim so they can enjoy a different Arizona experience since we’re not all desert.
The Phoenix area also has some incredible museums, but one of my favorites is the Musical Instrument Museum. This is always fun for anyone who enjoys music and is pretty unique to the area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The CEO of the company, Andy, definitely deserves recognition for where I am right now in the company. I had no retail experience, no pet experience (other than having had pets my whole life), and Andy still took a chance on me. I fell in love with being able to help people’s pets be healthier and happier. I’m a hard worker and the company took notice. Within a year I was managing a store and running events and our Rescue Me program. About a year later when an opportunity came up for promotion in to the office they came to me. I’ve been with the company almost seven years now. I now manage our office as well as handle the majority of our buying and marketing. I feel very lucky to have a job I look forward to every day…and I still get to help pets (I’m just on the other side of things now).
