Meet Leah Y | Ruby Mae Jewelry Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Y and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leah, how does your business help the community?
We lost our mom Patty Mae to Ovarian Cancer in 2010. None of us knew the symptoms at that time.
I’ve made it my mission to share that information provided by the NOCC on the backside of my business cards, at my events and in all of my shipments. Many of my shoppers say that they too are unaware of how Ovarian Cancer affects women and what the symptoms are.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m Leah and I like to create bold, one of a kind jewelry pieces that are not for everyone but they are definitely for some. I make unusual necklaces with brooch themes such as all owls or butterflies or assorted animals. I’ll use uncommonly large beads or wall decor. (See photo of the brass butterfly that was initially 1970’s wall art.)A shopper at Junk In the Trunk was marveling over the wall art pieces and she said “it’s like wearing a tattoo that you can remove”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d have breakfast on my patio and watch the wild bunnies run around. Next we’d go walk the Desert Botanical Gardens and then have lunch there at Gertrude’s. Next we’d take a drive to Saguaro Lake and have happy hour at the marina. A sunset Dolly steamboat ride around Saguaro Lake if possible. The drive there and home are classic Arizona scenery.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a fascination with vintage buttons. I started my small business with $20 worth of old buttons and a fellow vendor named Nancy Mills of Five Little Buttons has fostered and nurtured my love of them. She too loves buttons and she’s taught me so many things about them.
