We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Knox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve been super artistic since I was very young, even dressing up my little sister and taking photos of her on a little digicam. My heart is fully in art and artistic endeavors, photography being my main passion. In high school, I took photography and joined the photo club and became the first AP photo student at my school by senior year, I fell in love with the medium. I then became Lead Photographer with Cilento Photography for my job for a few years before the studio shut down. Now I do it for myself! Without photography my life would be very dull, so I strive to create images as a career as an outlet for my creativity.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’d describe my art as adventurous, bold, colorful, and dramatic. I think what sets me apart from others is my lighting and styling, and my tendency for bold colors and angles throughout my work, as well as breaking rules in photography that I’ve learned over my career.
I got to where I am in my career through hard work and persistence, (having applied multiple times a year to Cilento Photography until they hired me). I have come across many hardships and some time away from photography, but I’ve always made my way back and haven’t been happier with my current situation regarding photography. No matter how hard it gets, I refuse to give up on my art, and that’s a wonderful lesson I’ve learned. I just keep pushing forward and creating, and I keep improving and growing as a result.
I’ve learned that learning the rules is super important and that once you learn them, it’s okay to break them and let creativity run wild. Knowing how to use techniques and the rules of art (and knowing how to use your gear) helps in being able to bring any vision you have to fruition.
I want the world to know that hard work and persistence pays off, and to never give up on your dreams because the culmination of your hard work is so worth it. Push forward and create art that speaks to your soul, and share that with others!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If gotta be Roosevelt Row Arts District in downtown Phoenix! There’s so many cool things to do and see and eat. I love to do photoshoots here as well, for the variety of scenery. There’s lots of daytime activities and plenty of nightlife spots to visit. Definitely going to Jobot Coffee, the Nash, and First Friday. There’s also lots of boutique shops to visit, which I love. There’s also art shows held here, which I would love to be a part of in the future!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my mom and husband for always believing in me and supporting me throughout my creative endeavors. I also want to shoutout all the wonderful models I’ve worked with and the amazing photographers I mentored with at Cilento Photography.
