Meet Lex Hockey | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Hockey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lex, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
At the end of 2022 I decided to pack up my life in LA after being there for 10 years and leave my job as a Photography Coordinator in merch industry to pursue my dream career of working for myself as a freelance photographer while also spending time focusing on my rework shop, Poisonous Culture, and looking for my next place to call home.
This journey and decision hasn’t been to easiest. But I am so excited to be pursing my dreams and for what the future holds.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m not going to lie the journey to get where I am today professionally/creatively was not an easy one. It has definitely had it’s twists and turns along the way. And it has taken years to find my home in the photography world.
In the time that it has taken me to find my way I have found that a lot of my work reflects how I am feeling emotionally and mentally at the time. And in a way it is almost like my therapy.
Even when I’m taking portraits or photographing a merch campaign my thoughts and feelings towards the subject always shine through.
So I guess you could say what sets me apart from the rest would be that my work is a reflection of me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I have friends visit the area my favorite places to take them are to Darlisa Pizza in St. Michael for amazing pizza, The Windber Hotel in Windber for drinks, and Molly’s in Richland for pool.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Personally, I feel I am pretty blessed with the amazing support system I have around me. So I am finding it a little difficult to name just one person.
However, I would like to shout out Clare Bernik, Lauren Valentine & the Valentine family, Braighlee Rainey, Bri Deitle, Gordon Liao, and Mark Moore. Thank you all for always believing in me and supporting me through this journey. I could have not made it through this far without your love and support.
