We had the good fortune of connecting with Logan Rips and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Logan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I made the decision to shift my focus in life to what I love to do rather than on what’s ‘expected’ of me in today’s society. Work-life balance was the sole reason I made this change. I noticed that I kept putting myself in roles and jobs that just weren’t making me happy. Unfortunately it took me years to notice this. But even with that being said, I’d confidently and proudly say that I’m lucky enough to have noticed this early in my life. My biggest fear is “all of the sudden” looking in the mirror one day and being 40, 50, 60 years old and realizing that I’ve been working some stupid desk job that I’ve hated for the last 20, 30, 40 years and that I’ve “wasted” so much of my life working it. So, I like to look at the risk I took in becoming a videographer as converting the traditional “work life balance” concept to just “life balance”. I don’t want my job to define me. Or my work to define me. I want to define myself by doing what I love everyday.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art comes in many forms! My dad was a painter, and my brother a graphic designer. So I’ve always had that creative eye. But growing up in Upstate New York snowboarding, wakeboarding, and skateboarding, I fell in love with skate videos, snowboarding movies, surf culture, and the whole lifestyle that surrounded those communities. And nothing made me appreciate those things more than watching the way the pros documented their sports. So videography is where I found my niche and where my passion grew. Now, my work could be classified as “adventure videos” with a large emphasis on action sports. I love to film myself and others on snowboarding trips to Big Bear, CA, jet skiing with dolphins on Catalina Island, road trips along the west coast, and off-roading in the desert. I try to stay true to myself in all of my videos by never pretending to be someone I’m not, and always trying to capture the raw emotion that’s pulled from the experiences in my adventures. I can’t get enough of it. It’s a drug.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m currently living in Palm Springs, CA. I love this location because you can take your pick on which trip to take! I’m a 3.5 hour drive to Phoenix, 4 hour drive to Vegas, 2 hour drive to LA, 2 hour drive to Orange County beaches, 2.5 hour drive to San Diego, and a 2.5 hour drive to Mexico! The options are endless. You can usually find myself, friends and family snowboarding in Big Bear, exploring LA, surfing in Orange County, relaxing in San Diego, crossing the border to Mexico, visiting family in Scottsdale, or partying it up in Vegas!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s so many people in my life that I owe credit to. My mom, who’s lived and traveled all around the world, taught me to be adventurous and never stop exploring. My Dad, who’s an artist, taught me to look at life through a creative and artistic lens. My brother, who supported me like no one else, encouraged me more than anyone to go all-in on this new path. And lastly, my girlfriend Callie. She’s my best friend, my sidekick, my biggest fan, and by far my biggest supporter. Without these people I would never be able to continue doing what I do. And I’m so excited and proud to see where their love and support takes me on this journey.
