We had the good fortune of connecting with Hod Rabino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hod, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It really was of the processes that weren’t preplanned. I was a freelance writer covering Arizona State sports, and my editor ran a website that was tied into the magazine he was writing for. One day, he had enough of running the website and asked me to take over. This was 20 years ago and I really have enjoyed covering the various Sun Devil teams ever since.
What should our readers know about your business?
I run a website that covers Arizona State sports, mainly Football. Basketball and Baseball. I take pride in having a staff of creative writers and a passionate fan base that I engage in a civil manner on all Sun Devil sports topics. It was definitely not easy being an online beat writer at the turn of the century. The more traditional media outlets saw you as an outlier and let’s say that they were not ashamed of voicing that opinion in public. I just kept my head down and covered the various ASU teams best I could. My work spoke for itself and the good folks at Arizona State recognized that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Phoenix area is a great spot for visitors to spend time in. I would go and check out some hiking trails, horseback riding, spending time at the various lakes, playing golf, exploring the wide variety of great restaurants. And as a sports fan, I would definitely go to as many pro and college sports games, because there are no shortage of those.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Curt Blakeney. He was the editor of Sports Arizona Magazine that took a chance on me to get my foot in the door to cover Arizona State sports and helped me gain credibility.
