We had the good fortune of connecting with Luke Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luke, what inspires you?
As a musician and the youngest of five children, my inspiration is all over the board. On road trips we’re just listening to music around the house, I never really had an opportunity to request songs so I just kind of listen to whatever was playing at the time. We had a sporadic rotation of music ranging from U2, 90s country music, praise and worship, Abba, and blink-182. My brother Ben and I shared a room for a while until my sister left for college. Do you listen to anything from Pop punk to early 2000s Pop hits. So by the time I started writing music I had a plethora of artists to pull from. It wasn’t until diving heavily into Garth Brooks songs that I truly fell in love with the song writing process and country music as a genre. I’ve never been to a Garth Brooks show but I’ve seen how he moves around on video clips. I can see the same video clip 100 times and still get something new out of it. Every time I see videos of Garth brooks performances become hopeful. I think, “Man, with just the right push, I can do this.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Luke Palmer and I am a country artist from Tucson Arizona. I taught myself a guitar starting my junior year of high school. That’s when I brought my first guitar with money that I got for my birthday. I taught myself a few chords got kind of good enough to play for chapels at school. Got a little bit better, figured why not look for a gig. I found my first gig on craigslist. Started playing at the Pita Jungle every Friday night. That was the first time I’ve ever seen my name written anywhere besides a school flyer. There absolutely was a lot of challenges that I had to face starting then all the way up till now. It was really hard at first trying to figure out what image I wanted to portray who I wanted to be, who I want other people to see me as. I wanted to stay true to myself. I wanted to stay as real as I could be. I think I’ve done a pretty good job with that, I hope. after the pita jungle gig ended it was hard to fine gigs for a while. Most venues are looking for bands rather than one man acts I was blessed to find the Veritas Academy of Tucson community and met some amazing people including Kirk Fagan and the Carter family. Kirk is a musician as well. He was a guitar teacher at the school. When I started teaching at the school I met the Carter family Who hook me up at the gig at the Fire Truck Brewing Company where I still play almost every weekend. I believe that my only hiccup is that I’m not where I want to be. I know that I have a long way to go. There’s going to be a lot of bumps along the way. With the community that I’ve built around me, I know for a fact that I can take these challenges head-on.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well first and foremost, I take him to one of my shows. You gotta catch one of my shows while you’re in town. Also you got to eat at the amazing Fire Truck Brewing Company. Their wings are out of this world. They just opened a pizza restaurant. So you definitely have to check them out. If it’s basketball season I would definitely take them to UVA basketball game. One of my favorite things to do here in town. A lot of NBA potential at those games. If you’re hungry, Tucson has some of the best eating spots in the country. We have some of the greatest Mexican restaurants you can find not Mexico. One of my favorites, El Guero Canelo how’s my favorite carne asada burrito. If you want to go watch a movie one of the best movie theaters in town is Roadhouse Cinemas. They have a bar, a restaurant, and a theater experience. Plus the reclining seats make you feel like you’re at home. if you’re an avid hiker unlike myself, Tucson has some of the best hiking trails out there. The scenery atop some of these trails is second to none. Mount Lemmon is one of my favorite hikes. The view looking down at the city is spectacular.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Where to start? First and foremost I’d be remiss if I didn’t take my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You put a song in my heart and gave me a story to tell, by God’s grace I’m gonna tell it. my parents also heavily supported me through this process by giving me rides to shows and always being there for nearly every performance. My mom sparked a love for music within me when I was about in third grade. Sitting around that old piano singing hymns out of that old red hymn book, I thought there’s nothing I’d rather do than this. I’d like to thank my uncle Saul as well for telling me never to give up but keeping me humble at the same time. i’d like to thank my friends for coming to my shows and supporting bringing their friends to my shows and just growing this amazing community that we’ve built over the years. Could not have done it without you guys. i’d like to think Kirk Feagin for telling me about new opportunities and new places looking for musicians to do shows at their venues and for always hooking me up with gigs before taking them himself. I’d like to think Taylor and Crystal Carter and the amazing folks at Fire Truck Brewing Company for being one of my favorite venues to play at. They are a class act. It’s always fun to play at that venue and even when I’m having a hard week seeing people smile whenever I play shows over there makes it all worth it.
