We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marc, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For me it was three words: Do Good Business. To me, I interpret those words as all encompassing around what we are building, who we work with and who is on our team. Do Good Business means having integrity, transparency and an honest approach. It’s about creating win-win opportunities – for our clients to get amazing results and for our team to put be challenged and rewarded accordingly. It’s about finding the talent that loves the hunt for solutions, has a passion to serve and a thirst to do it better than anyone else. Previous companies I have worked for just stressed the bottom line. They would compromise either team culture, product quality, pricing transparency or all of the above. Don’t get me wrong, we are in the business to generate revenue, but to what end?
For us it’s about creating a long-term model that allows the team to grow, contribute and make a good living. And client facing, it’s about interpreting their vision and mission and creating solutions to accomplish their goals. Nothing feels better than when you meet or exceed expectations and you know that you’ve made a difference. Everyone feels the lift… that’s “Doing Good Business”.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My professional career was mostly around radio broadcasting. I always had a digital background (websites, some TV, etc) but I spent 25 years in broadcasting. Radio was not easy… everyone wants to do it, but it takes a lot of sacrifice and a willingness not to grow rich (at least on the on-air side of things). What radio did teach was that when you pair passion with persistence and a hunger to learn nothing is impossible. And the best part about radio people is that we have a crazy desire to get things done efficiently and correct the first time. We hate wasting time because when you’re about to turn on a microphone, you better know where you’re going and how you’re going to entertain because live radio is an artform. You don’t get a second chance. It’s that drive to get things done right – to solve a client’s need – and get it right the first time that makes what we do remind me of radio. We love getting inside a client’s vision, pulling out those perfect nuggets that convey the message and then bring that message to life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to Shoutout to Scott Fey – the former owner and general manager of The Edge 103.9 (radio) back in the day. Scott was instrumental in teaching me to follow my gut, commit 100% and how staying focused moves needles (and mountains). Long story short, Scott allowed me and my team to make very unorthodox moves, some that seemed counterproductive even. And he had the faith to let us carry on with our vision even when things looked bleak and naysayers were plentiful. In the end, we achieved higher ratings than ever before, generated a listener culture that was fanatical and saved a radio station. He had such a profound effect on so many of us on the team. His genuine, leaders-eat-last type of approach resulted in talent across the country now leading their own teams, in various fields, and proving that you can lead with integrity first.
