We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Cook and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is my creativity and deep passion for my craft. I enjoy baking and making beautiful edible creations. I love my work. “If you love your work, you’ll never work a day in your life”.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m the type of person that when I get an idea, I dive right in and put my heart into it. I don’t do things little by little, I dive deep and that’s how I’ve gotten to where I am today. Back in 2012, I wanted to make my daughter her birthday cake so my husband bought me a stand mixer. As soon as he bought me that mixer, I thought about how cool it would be to make edible delicious cakes and desserts like I saw in magazines. I didn’t want to waste food so I put up a Craigslist ad asking a stranger to trust me to make them a cake. Well, a young mom messaged me and asked me for a three tier cake and I took the job. I remember my husband coming home and asking why I would take on such a large order. But that’s how I am. Go big or go home! I stayed up for two nights making that cake and while it wasn’t perfect, it was delicious! That client came back year after year to get a cake from me. So how did I get where I am? Diving head first without fear and loving my craft. Learning, adapting and having my support system tell me to keep on diving.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, I think some of the most fun places to check out are the plant nurseries. I get a lot of inspiration from walking around the plant nurseries in Tucson. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy the beautiful weather and be inspired.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my biggest fan, my husband Richard. He helped me start Emarem COOKies almost a decade ago and has continued to be behind the scenes making deliveries or picking up last minute ingredients. While I may be the hands and talent, he’s always there lifting me up.
