Meet Mark Caron | Artist and sculptor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Caron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The investment, be it monetarily or your heart and soul. A person looks at a piece of your work and asks, “well it only took you a few days to make this, why som high a price?”. They never take in to account, hours of training, thousands of dollars for equipment, countless failures while learning, etc. if we were to charge what we needed to pay the bills, it might shock a few people.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career in wood turning and sculpture starts like most great artists, with sadness and sorrow.
My wife of 22 years passed away and i was faced with making her cremation urn. giving that my art to this point was just fooling around and making the occasional gift, this was the hardest thing i would ever be tasked with making. But after months of trying, crying and failing, the final product opened the door and my heart as to my real purpose.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
that’s a big deal for any one person. for me? its little family place and long surviving hole in the wall spots for dinner. first two day, here in phoenix, next two days, north to flagstaff and sedona and that last two days in tucson and surrounding area. real places, real people, real experiences.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My brother Kevin Caron. Who is also an artist and sculptor and the one person who inspires me the most. We both come from working class backgrounds, (him a truck driver and mechanic, me a repo man) and somehow we both found our voices later in life and now craft the things that speak to us. He never fails to keep me honest and on track, and has that needed kick in the butt for when i get lost.
