Meet Mary Spry | Photographer & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Spry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a single mother and former model I thought that being behind the camera would be a great way to capture my boys childhood. Once I began taking their photos, friends and family started asking me what I would charge to take their photos as well. It was then I decided to make this into a career and created my own business. Photography has ALWAYS been a passion of mine and I have always been a bit artsy. Doing this for a living has been an absolute dream!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Beginning a photography business hasn’t been the easiest (or cheapest) thing. Haha! I love being creative though and trying new things! And photography has helped me grow into my artistic self. When I started I didn’t know a single thing about being a business owner. I wasn’t sure where to start, how to advertise, who to market to, or even what to capture. But doing my research and self teaching through webinars and YouTube videos has been my way of learning and growing! I am excited to one day not have to work as a LNA in my local hospital and to beable to do this photography thing full time.

I am a single mother of two boys and it’s always been a mission working around their schedule. But being a photographer gives me the freedom to be with them and more present at home when before I was ALWAYS working. And with the job I have, working Five 12 hour shifts is not really a great way to spend time with your children.

Being a photographer also gives me the ability to capture the most precious moments and make them art for the walls in my home. It’s an absolute dream! And having the ability to do that for others is definitely fulfilling. They say if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life, and let me tell you, they weren’t kidding!

If there’s one thing I could say to anyone reading this, it would be to always follow your dreams! No matter how hard or difficult it may be! You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish by just putting your mind to it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was to take my friends anywhere it would be camping, either in the Hualapais or Williams Arizona! Heck even to one of our beaches in laughlin or Lake Havasu! We would eat grilled food and sleep under the stars and enjoy each others company catching up on life and reminiscing on the life we’ve lived! Going on hikes and exploring new places!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would give my shout out to my muses. My little men. Without them I would have had no one to practice on! And they are the sweetest little models!
