We had the good fortune of connecting with Meagan Poetschlag and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meagan, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up I always admired the artists, performers, and storytellers. I always knew a normal 9 to 5 job wasnt what i wanted for myself. I wanted to create something unique and put smiles and sometimes shock upon peoples faces. I have always loved the elements involved in fantasy writing, so after reading my fair share of magical stories I started to create my own.
Im shy about my “weirdness” most days but when I step up and show it off I usually get the best reactions and support. Providing something fun and different makes all the difficult parts of being self published worth it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The book publishing world is very competitive and some say, cut throat. I knew nothing and have definitely learned a lot along the way. I decided that the traditional route for book publishing wasn’t for me, as I wanted to keep my unique style and voice.

That being said, its not easy, but so much more rewarding to accomplish the same goals on your own, without a huge team.

For me the key is to be your true self and not blend in with the crowd. And always take everything as a learning experience. That will bring you success.

My devotion and love of dragons is how I let my own story shine. Noone in this world sees dragons like I do. They are not monsters, but loyal protectors.

Grab a copy of my book Angoleth’s Heir if you want to see dragons from a parallel world to our own.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you wanted to come visit me and have a good time I would take you away from the crowds and bustle of the city. Let me show you my favorite thing about living near Tucson.

We are headed to the Saguaro National Forest. Why? Because I have to share with you why this Sonoran Desert is so gorgeous. We will go hiking through miles of landscape. Rest in a shady canyon. Spot dozens of different colored flowers and rocks. Admire the intimidating Saguaros and other cacti. Discover lots of critters with fur, feathers, and scales.

I would also take you to the Sonoran Desert Museum. Its more like a zoo than an actual museum. Its a wonderful place to see all kinds of history, plants, and animals from the local area. Perfect for tourists and locals alike.

Stay the night with me here in the desert and we will get to see the most awesome view of the stars you have ever seen. Stare up long enough and we might see stars that fly around in the sky.

Yep! I am going to show you how exciting it is in the desert. No people to meet. Just the excitement of desert nature. Wanna stay a week? Lets go camping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The journey of self publishing seems rough but the support of the indie author community on Instagram was amazing along the way. Its hard to just pic one or two since I had so much support on bookstagram.

I am lucky to have an amazing independent artist to work with. She deserves a shoutout for sure. Suemei Mar does beautiful art peices and has a badass Etsy shop for all her creations. I commissioned her for the Illustrations for Angoleth’s Heir and she really helped my characters come alive.

Another shoutout is due for Mary Walsh who is an indie author and editor. Her hard work on edits for Angoleth’s Heir made my true voice shine through.
