We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Lefebvre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Deciding to open a D1 Training facility was motivated by several factors. First, our family was fairly integrated in the fitness world and we noticed a trend where facility staff would be treated inappropriately or scheduled to work volunteer hours. Opening our own studio gave us a place to create something better for fitness enthusiasts to practice what they love.

Secondly, D1 is truly about creating a healthier lifestyle for everyone in the community. For the kids, we’re building character by enforcing the character words that embody D1 training. We’re also trying to create a fun environment for kids to build a healthy relationship with fitness to provide them a healthy future. We teach them how their body works and about nutrition so they can be self-empowered one day. Then for those more serious athletes, we want to help them get to the next level. High school and college sports can be some of the most exhilarating times in an athletes career and we want to help them maximize that.

Lastly, we wanted a place where we could support the underserved community. Mesa offers a unique location that has lower-income pockets and more wealthy pockets. As our studio grows, we’re hoping to give back more and more to the underserved community through scholarships and community service work.

What should our readers know about your business?
We offer athletic-based training for our community, starting as early as 5 years old but with core services starting at 7. We service athletes of all ages and will tailor exercises to accommodate the individual. We understand that not all members are the same and they’re more than a number on a spreadsheet. They have their own internal struggles, physical pains, and social dynamics – we understand that! We want to meet each of our members where they are and support them in a way that’s unique to them. All of our members are familiar with our Graduate Check-In process where we spend as long as the member wants discussing their goals, their journey, and next steps. This adds a truly personal touch to the way we interact with our members and we believe it drives stronger outcomes and connections.

I think one thing that’s unique to our family and business is that we are very much a middle-class family. We’ve taken on a ton of debt to make this dream come true for our community and our staff. We have our entire livelihood on the line and we jumped both feet in to support this community. We don’t have any aspirations to be rich through exploiting the community or our employees. As you can imagine, none of it has been easy and we spend a lot of days reminding ourselves why we did it in the first place.

As long as we can, we will continue to be a home for our members and “the place for the athlete.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
With kid names like, Harbor, Reef, and Sailor, you know we’re seeking out water! We’re real water junkies with a true affinity for the ocean. In the desert, that can be tough so we spend a lot of time looking for boating opportunities or time floating the river. If we have friends come to town, one of the automatic activities is floating the Salt River on our paddleboards. We like to get there first thing in the morning with a full cooler of food and drinks. We love the fresh air, the mountain views and the cooling temperatures of the water.

After that, we’re headed somewhere we can eat, drink, and play! Somewhere like Culinary Dropout is a big hit for our family because we’re not bound to seats and a table. We’re an active family that likes to be moving all the time so places to play are always a big hit for us. Pour Taphouse is another favorite location for us to stop in and grab a quick drink or two before we set out on our bigger plans for the day!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, it feels a little tacky but I’m truly grateful for our members, particularly the 30 or so members that have been with us since we opened in October 2023. Every day, they entrust us with their health and wellbeing. We never take those moment for granted and we always give it 110%. We will always be there for our members, whenever and however they want it.
