Meet Mehul Mistry | Construction Manager and Wedding DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mehul Mistry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mehul, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I feel like I didn’t pursue it but really just fell into it by chance. I grew up around music and playing drums with family and at school, which then transitioned to taking on an event as a DJ to provide music. I was going to school to get a degree in construction management so I knew if I were to continue doing events I would only do it part time so I can pursue a career in construction. I’m happy I get to do both things I love for a living.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started DJing in 2009 for fun while in college and then I’m still doing it 14 years later and having fun doing it. I have lots of people to thank for my success but I think having made the move from CA to AZ may have been the best thing for my business. Arizona is a big destination wedding market and 80% of my business is with clients doing a destination wedding. The most challenging part has been scaling the business based on the market and my personal life situations. I’ve had to turn business away because I don’t do this full time and take certain weekends off to be home with family. I always say, “Book early before the dates are closed off.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a big foodie so I would definitely share some of my top spots in the valley to get food at. I’d recommend staying at one of the following resorts: Arizona Biltmore, JW Camelback, JW Desert Ridge or Hyatt Regency Gainey Ranch as these are some of my favorite spots to do a staycation at and have some of the nicest updated rooms and resort spaces on site. Sedona is also a great spot for a day trip or a day trip to Jerome. There are way too many good food spots to list so you’ll just have to contact me for my bookmarked spots on Yelp!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest thanks goes to my wife and my family! My wife, for her continued support knowing that I’ll be gone on weekends for almost half of the year doing what I love. My family, for their support to help me get started with the gear I needed to start and for referring me to others that need a DJ. The people I work with in the wedding industry also deserve a big shoutout for their trust in my work to refer to their clients. Lastly, my past clients for trusting me but also referring me to their family and friends because most of my business is relied upon repeat clients.
