Meet Mellissa Perry Hill

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mellissa Perry Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mellissa, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Inner Compass Counseling & Consultation is a specialized trauma-informed mental health practice serving individuals healing from religious trauma, high-control systems, life transitions, and relational wounds. We provide ethical, evidence-based psychotherapy through EMDR, parts work, and other trauma-focused modalities.
Our impact extends beyond individual sessions. We offer clinician consultation, trainings, therapy groups, and educational resources that strengthen the broader mental health community. We maintain limited sliding-scale spots to increase accessibility and provide free or low-cost resources for both clients and clinicians.
By addressing complex trauma at both the individual and systemic level, we help people reclaim autonomy, rebuild identity, and create healthier families and communities.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I didn’t start in private practice. I started in education — deeply inspired by the work and equally discouraged by the system. I loved my students, but I could see how structural limitations restricted both teachers and children. I knew I wanted to meet needs in a deeper, more sustainable way.
As an educator, I also found myself needing state assistance to support my own family. That experience activated my background in sociology in a very real way. I wasn’t just observing systems anymore; I was living inside them. I saw firsthand how institutions can unintentionally work against the very outcomes they claim to value.
That lens followed me into psychotherapy. My passion became helping people navigate and heal from unhealthy systems that harm instead of help. Whether it’s high-control religion, rigid family structures, or institutional barriers, I’ve dedicated my career to trauma recovery and reclaiming personal agency.
As a woman building influence in this field, I’ve faced plenty of roadblocks. I’ve had to learn how to advocate for myself professionally and legally, and how to stay grounded in my own integrity. Along the way, I’ve learned lessons about resilience, grit, rest, and resistance.
What sets our practice apart is our reputation for ethical, trauma-informed care and our willingness to stand up for marginalized and underrepresented groups. My brand represents something simple but powerful: it is possible to build a life of thriving; even in the face of dysfunctional systems and past trauma.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, we’d start the morning at The Nile Coffeehouse & Theater in Mesa — strong coffee, good music energy, and a little bit of creative inspiration. For lunch, it’s Liberty Market in Gilbert every time. It’s just solid, classic, and feels like home.
During the day, we’d hike Camelbacks for the views (not easy but worth it), maybe sneak in a yoga class at The Yoga Spot in Gilbert, and if we’re feeling ambitious, paddle board at Canyon Lake. Arizona really shows off if you let it.
At night, we’re heading to The White Rabbit in Gilbert for the downtown vibe.
I also love supporting queer-friendly coffee spots around the Valley like Jarrod’s Coffeehouse and Brick Road Coffee. I do wish we had more queer-owned and LGBTQIA-allied spaces in Gilbert specifically, and I genuinely hope to be part of seeing that continue to grow over time.
There’s honestly too much to fit into one day — which is exactly why I love it here.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe so much to the women CEOs and business owners who said yes to my (sometimes persistent) coffee date requests. The ones who welcomed me in, shared what they knew, and offered affordable consultations and guidance so I could grow… not just as a clinician, but as a business owner.
There is something powerful happening here in the Valley among counselors, private practice owners, and women who genuinely want to see other women succeed. I’ve been shaped by that culture of abundance and generosity, and I try to model it now in my own practice. Especially in how I think about accessibility and mentorship.
But if I had to dedicate this shoutout to anyone, it would be my three kids. They have been my drive, my motivation, and sometimes even my “buy-in” to keep building a life that feels aligned and meaningful. Without even realizing it, they’ve been my deepest why. They are at the root of every risk I’ve taken and every bit of success I’ve experienced so far.
Behind almost every idea I’ve had for expansion, there’s been a teenage boy saying, “You should do it, Mom.” Or my teenage daughter reminding me, “You’ll regret it if you don’t.” Or my school-aged kiddo looking at me wide-eyed and saying, “Wow, that’s my mom.”
