Meet Michael Beck | Producer/recording engineer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Beck and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started producing and being a recording engineer in the mid 90s. It started as a way to basically make money while I wasn’t on the road being a full-time touring musician. Once I move to Phoenix in 94 I started sound vision recording in 99. And stayed. On that side of the glass until some opportunities became available for me to tour again with my own band. Currently called Escape the Hive.. So I’m back to touring as a vocalist and musician, but still running and producing at SoundVision recording in Mesa.

What should our readers know about your business?
I produce records in more of an old school fashion. Trying to find the best parts of the band to push forward in the mix and create a sound that is unique to that Artist. That’s something that is definitely missing more and more in modern music. There have been horrible records made in great recording studios. But at SoundVision we try and have a great studio vibe, a control room filled with top quality equipment, and a producer who knows how to use it to get the best out of it. Thats the goal !

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take a show in at the celebrity theater. My favorite venue in the valley. Take them by Alice Cooper‘s Solid Rock teen center. It’s a great place that I have been involved with for over 20 years. Love what they do for teens in the community. It’s great to see. And meeting Uncle Alice is always a possibility and definitely a bonus!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Back in the late 80s, I was signed to my first recording contract. Being in a real studio with a real producer was very enlightening. I knew my whole career was on the line and wanted to at least speak the same language that he did. And have as much say and control over the product that my career depended on as I could. After the session, he pulled me aside and said that I had an ear to be a producer and that if I ever wanted help in that area, he would help me. His name is Tom Tatman. Tom produced records for Tora Tora back in the day and more recently Stone Sour.
