Meet michelle lawanda | artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with michelle lawanda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi michelle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process of starting my own business was my daughter. I started my business in order to leave my legacy behind for her, so she could share my journey with her children and my grandchildren.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I would describe my art as “Fun Art..Not Fine Art…I love using lots of bright bold colors in the art that I create. Most of my art comes from what I am feeling. I also make my art very affordable. I always have people telling me I should increase my prices. Why? I think people should be able to afford the art that they love and want.
I am excited about the New Year and all the possibilities that may come my way
It was not easy getting to where I am…even though, I have a ways to go. There are so many great artists out there and with Social media, sometimes it can get overwhelming. But I keep pressing on.
I have learned patience. There are so many things I want to do with my art, but I know that I have to be patient and opportunities will come
I would like the world to know how a little dream you have can turn into a bright reality.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in the city has to be Downtown Charleston. I love visiting the famous King Street and seeing all the small businesses thriving. And how can you forget about the famous Rainbow Row, or the Pineapple Water fountain and The Battery.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out the The Station at Park Circle in North Charleston. They were the first business that allowed me to display and sell my artwork . Before them, I was reaching out to various small businesses around town trying to seek opportunities for my art. I got many “no’s”…”maybe’s”..don’t call us, we’ll call you”. and sometimes no response at all. ..Once The Station gave me the opportunity, other doors stated to open for me. I will be forever grateful to them
