We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Broomhead and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk is necessary for success. I focus on the benefit of success as opposed to the cost of failure. But, even in failure there is benefit. The most valuable lessons I’ve learned have been through failure.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve had 2 careers. I was an electrician for the first part of my adult life. Being in media was not anything I ever expected. When my brother Tom was Killed in Iraq being the oldest brother, I was the family spokesman. I wanted to make sure I honored him appropriately with my words. As I was asked to speak at more events, I realized that I was saying what many people were feeling. I also wanted to find mutual respect with those that disagreed with me. I think what sets me apart from others in talk radio is that I look for common ground where I can. I don’t try to change anyone’s mind. But I do try to get them to respect my opinion. What I’ve learned along the way…
Most people are searching for common ground. They want to be heard and respected.
Some people are looking for a fight. So sometimes fighting is necessary.
Look for common ground. But be prepared to fight.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many great places here! No mountains where I am from (SW Florida). So, The Sanctuary Resort on Camelback mountain. Sedona is a must for any visitor to Arizona. Love the drive to the White Mountains. But I would also make sure to see the memorials at Wesley Bolin Plaza. The history and sacrifice that is represented there shows what Arizona is.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Early childhood was my Grandfather Frank. He gave me self confidence and a sense of duty to the people I love and to the community. Glenn Beck for his mentorship in my early days in radio. He helped me understand the business and how to be a better communicator.
Lisa James was the first person to see my ability to speak in public. She put me on the biggest stages and allowed me to talk about the things I am passionate about.
Robb Williams is a pastor that became my friend and mentored me as I grew in my faith. He helped me become a teacher and guided me through failures.
