We had the good fortune of connecting with Mimi Francis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mimi, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Everything around me inspires me; movies, TV, music, even walking down the street can inspire me. I once had an idea for a story come to me as my husband and I walked past the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. I try to keep something to take notes on with me at all times because I never know when inspiration might hit.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I think the thing I am most proud of is that I pursued my dream despite the fact that some people might think I’m too old. I didn’t sign the contract with my publisher until I was 48 years old, my first book came out when I was 49 years old, and I am still going strong at 51. I just released my 6th book! It wasn’t easy getting where I am today, but I keep persevering. I had to put the naysayers out of my mind and believe in myself. Along the way, I learned that the trust and support of my friends and family is what keeps me going. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am. I want people to know that I am just like everybody else, a woman who had a dream and went after it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a bit of a homebody, but I do love living in the big city. There are so many great places to eat–Joes BBQ in downtown Gilbert, the Henhouse Cafe, Mi Amigos, The Farmhouse. I love going to Hale Theatre or the Phoenix Theatre. As a former drama kid, I really enjoy smaller, more intimate venues with local people in the cast. We would definitely have to check out two of my favorite places, Changing Hands Bookstore and The Poisoned Pen.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people who most deserve credit and recognition in my life are my husband, Frank and my children, Ariana, Tiana, and Giovanni. They stand behind me 100%. My husband is always coming up with new ways to get my name out into the world, my daughters love to talk me up on social media, and my son encourages me every step of the way.
