We had the good fortune of connecting with Mindy Vo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mindy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At 40, as a single mom starting fresh, I chose to return to what lights me up, beauty and nails. I’ve been in this industry since 1999, and while I’ve owned salons before, I realized that true fulfillment comes from combining passion with purpose. This time, I’m bringing all of my experience, especially my background as an OPI educator, into the heart of my business. My goal is not just to create beautiful nails, but to create a beautiful space, one where my team can grow, my clients can learn, and everyone can feel inspired, empowered, and celebrated. It’s more than a business; it’s a new beginning, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I understand business—I’ve been an entrepreneur since 1999 and hold a BA in both Health Science and Business. I’ve learned how to market to a wide range of clients, from those less connected online to younger, digital-savvy generations.
But even with all my experience, I faced one of my toughest challenges yet. I brought my sister-in-law into the business, offering her potential equity in exchange for helping manage operations. Instead of supporting me, she formed an alliance with a few others from the salon, eventually turning them against me. They all walked away, and one even tried to damage my reputation on social media when I was hiring. The betrayal, especially from someone I considered family, was incredibly painful.
After working through that difficult time and leaning on the support of true friends and family, I realized that not everyone you trust will have your best interest at heart. Out of the four who left, I truly only cared for one.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the experience because it led me to build a stronger, more loyal team. I kept placing job ads, reached out to former employees, and through persistence and a little luck, found staff who aligned with my vision and values.
I want every entrepreneur to know that the early years can be the hardest. There will be setbacks and betrayals, but staying focused on your goals is key. Even when my team walked out, I still had a solid customer base. Finding the right people became a challenge, but it was a good problem to have because my business was still thriving.
I’m deeply thankful to all my loyal customers who stood by me through those tough moments. Some clients left, unaware of what was happening behind the scenes, but I truly appreciate those who continued to believe in me and my business.
I truly care about my clients—far beyond just providing a service. Unlike many other salons, I make it a point to build real relationships and create a sense of community. For example, I had two clients who had been struggling to find a job for over a year. Knowing another client who was hiring but having trouble finding a motivated candidate, I connected them in hopes that it would lead to something positive for both.
In another instance, I had a young client who jokingly mentioned that all her siblings would be married before her. Around the same time, another client shared that they were looking to find someone for their son, a kind young man currently serving in the military. I introduced them, hoping to help spark a new connection.
Moments like these remind me why I do what I do. It’s about so much more than nails—it’s about building relationships, uplifting each other, and creating a supportive community through my salon. Building these kinds of connections is one of my favorite parts of owning my business. It’s not just about beauty services—it’s about creating a community where people can support, inspire, and sometimes even find new opportunities or relationships.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have five best friends from childhood, and they all live in California. One of my best friends still hasn’t had a chance to visit me here, but when she does, I already have the perfect plan. I’d start by bringing her to my salon for a relaxing manicure and pedicure—she deserves to be pampered!
We’d go to The Montauk in Scottsdale for their amazing lobster rolls and enjoy a stroll around downtown Scottsdale. The following day we will go to The Phoenix Palace in Chandler for some delicious dim sum. Then take her to Puttshack in Scottsdale Quarter—my kids and I love it there; it’s such a fun and vibrant spot. We’d head back to Chandler to grab some ice cream from Snow Time and dinner at home.
Before sunrise, we’d hike the South Mountain trails, then get a massage at Kneading hands on Dobson and Warner, then swing by 99 Ranch Market Plaza on Dobson and Chandler Blvd, to grab a bite and just hang out. And because I love Prescott so much, I’d definitely take her there for a peaceful getaway.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My children have always been my greatest motivation. In my late 20s and 30s, I was confident and thriving in my career. But after my separation, I found myself in a place I never expected—feeling lost, broken, and like I had sacrificed so much of myself for someone who walked away. It was one of the hardest chapters of my life. But I’ve always been a go-getter. I made a decision to rebuild not just my business, but my sense of purpose. I want my daughters to see that no matter what life throws at you—or how old you are—you can always start over, chase your dreams, and create something beautiful from the ground up.
OPI has been a constant in my life through some of the toughest seasons. There were moments when I questioned everything—including my role as an educator—but OPI never gave up on me. I’m incredibly grateful to still be a part of a company that has shown me such loyalty and support. I’ve loved the OPI brand since 1999, and my connection to it runs deep. It’s more than just polish—it’s been a pillar in my journey.
