We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Laieski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, how do you think about risk?
Risk to me needs to be calculated, working as a photographer I feel like the entire business of art is a risk in some ways. In my life risk has really been the key to my growth, I take risk on with as much understanding of it as possible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So my photography is mainly street photography however I do work with fashion and automotive photography as well. I think what sets me apart is my obsession with things and using my background in skateboarding to find new ways of looking at common scenes. I got to where I am today really through obsessing about different subjects and then developing ideas of how to work that into what I do. It hasn’t been easy, some people won’t like or care about your work, but that doesn’t bother me because I’m making this work for me and if others gravitate to it that is wonderful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So if someone was visiting me and hadn’t been to the valley I would definitely show them all the wonderful breweries we have here, from The Shop Beer Co, AZ Wilderness, The Perch, Peoria Artisan, and more. For hanging out I feel like there is so much if the weather is nice it would just depend outdoor vs indoor activity, but I think people visiting the valley should just explore there is so much to do in AZ it all depends on your interest.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my professors at ASU, Liz Cohen, Stephen Marc, and Mark Klett. They all took the time to guide me and drove me to push for the success I want in photography, and now that I’ve graduated and gone on my own path the lessons they taught me stuck with me and I use them so much in my day to day life.
