Meet Monica Welsh | Owner / Vaux Studio

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Welsh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process for Vaux started about 10 years ago when I was planning my own wedding. I wanted something intimate, but having such large families, intimate seemed impossible. I searched for a solution, but we ultimately ended up having a very large reception following our 2012 nuptials.
As time went on, I frequently brainstormed the idea of an intimate space for weddings. It was apparent that not every couple wants a large wedding, but the courthouse is not always a viable option either. The consideration of what a microwedding venue would offer; the convenience, the cost, the simplicity, it was exactly what I wanted, and felt that others would want it too. A small place that was beautifully curated, thoughtful, and was designed specifically to accomodate micro weddings.
When you hear the words ‘wedding chapel’ minds often move to Vegas elopements. This is not what I wanted for Vaux. I wanted a bespoke, curated, space in a location with history and beauty. I wanted a space of meaning and substance, not only for my couples but a location that felt like home to me. I have many ties to Philadelphia, My father was born and raised here, my brothers and my husband graduated Temple and LaSalle, and I have family who reside here. I felt that Philadelphia would make the perfect home for Vaux.
I started looking for a space in the fall of 2017, and by April of 2018, Vaux was open.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Opening a micro wedding venue when micro weddings did not exist definitely raised some eyebrows. I had to convince myself it was a good idea every day. Being a mother of 3 and working a fulltime job, starting a business from the ground up, and with a (very) small business loan, in the wedding industry of all places, seemed futile at times. I was constantly motivated by my discontent at my finance job, my endless inherent nature to create, and want to set an example for my children (Even though something is scary and seems overwhelming, if you are called to it, go for it)
After establishing Vaux, and surviving the pandemic, my current and most burdening struggle with being a “professional” is setting boundaries. Setting them with my clients, with home life, and with myself. While I was working my finance job, I was able to leave work and go home that was it. I had no emotional ties to numbers. But, with my couples, I want them to feel like I am their best friend and biggest advocate. Someone who is on their side and there to make sure their day is absolutely perfect. I want to give them everything and then some, but in this business, this is not always possible. My assistant always says, ‘Under promise and over deliver.” And I need to hone that mindset every day.
My couples will consistently remain my top priority but developing a work/life balance is beneficial to everyone involved. If my cup is full, it’s easier to fill the cups around you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is actually kind of a sad question. A few of my ALL-TIME favorite spots closed for good through the pandemic but our current favs for food & cocktails are The Dandelion Cafe, Charlie was a sinner, Bud and Marilyn’s, and the ALWAYS amazing PARC. Harp and Crown is also a winner because not only do they provide a gorgeous atmosphere, food and drink- They also have bowling. Truly our ONLY coffee spot is Green Street on Spruce and 11th.
If you coming to tour the city, The Philadelphia Museum is always a must go! If in Rittenhouse, a stop by Inner light Aura for an Aura reading and photo is an amazing way to spend your afternoon. The city is perfect because it provides seasonal events and markets to be enjoyed, always.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, there would be no Vaux without the support of my family. When I speak about Vaux, I actively say “we”. This is an all-encompassing ‘we’, because it has taken a village. In the infancy of Vaux, my children sacrificed many weekends to help paint & decorate, my parents were hands on with furniture pickup and helping with the kids. My husband has remained patient over the last 5 years, lending his expertise when needed and allowing me to figure out every aspect of this business. Even as Vaux grows, their help is crucial to Vaux’s success. My mother-in-law still watches the kids every wedding weekend. The sacrifices that have been made so that Vaux can exist, and grow are immeasurable. I am infinitely grateful and forever indebted to them.
