We had the good fortune of connecting with Nina Paz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nina, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
While I’ve always wanted to work for myself, I knew being in the arts was for me. When I fell in love with photography and decided to throw myself full force into making this my career, I knew that I’d have to make some hard decisions in “branding” because every photographer i’ve know had branded themselves as a “______ Photographer”, Wedding Photographer, Lifestyle Photographer, etc… but I’ve always just wanted to do my own thing. I just wanted to be a photographer. I have no labels and I feel like because of this I made sure that as a photographer I’d be able to take on whatever client I’d want to work with. The beauty of taking on different kinds of photography work is that I get to explore the craft and gain experience in each genre of photography.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Again, I’m a photographer that loves wedding. I also love music so I get to work with local talent all the time. I like to do what my heart wants. Not only that but I pride myself on the fact that I feel comfortable posing/working with POC and plus size models! I’ve worked with so many different photographers that just don’t acknowledge that sometimes you gotta push yourself a little more to make sure you’re truly taking care of ALL your clients. I want my work to be inclusive to all and with that means learning the techniques to take care of all my clients. Period. Making sure your feel BOMB AF is my goal. I want my clients to walk out of my sessions feeling empowered and beautiful in their skin.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Tempe and I absolutely love this little city! Rula Bulas Irish Pub is everything. Cornish Pasty for their drinks and atmosphere! Walks around Papago Park, or the Botanical Gardens are always a cute spot for long talks. Or perhaps we can hit downtown Phoenix? You go The Duce for food and fun. Or Welcome Diner and a plant excursion at Pueblo right next-door! The Herd Museum or Phoenix Art Museums “Pay what you want” entry on Wednesday? Hot. Girl just hit me up, let’s have fun!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Being a responsible student in high school gave one of my teachers the hope to have me be her assistant wedding coordinator for Shine Events, helping me realize I absolutely LOVE weddings. I then decided to blend my love of photography and weddings together and moved on to be a team member/editor for a wedding photographer/videography team that hired a lot of different people that have lifted me up and taught me important things in my time working with them! These people are still with me to this day now that I work for myself! Santiago Almada Photography & Frank Pantano Productions are some of my most reliable co-workers in this field and I am so lucky to have such talented and hilarious people to be my right and left hand men. Clients that turn friends are also such huge supports too! Like AJ Odneal, a local singer/song writer here in phoenix, is someone that shows me constant love! No person is an island, and without these people Im pretty sure my island would have sank into the ocean a long time ago!
