Meet Nyanah Shuler | Licensed Hair Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nyanah Shuler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nyanah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I stared my business in 2020 during the pandemic. I was about a year out of high school and had a new born son. Of course everyone was stuck in the house and I used the time to really think about what I wanted to do with my life. I was working from my home office with my newborn baby and would think to myself ‘this can’t be it for me’. I always knew that I wanted to do something for myself and be my own boss. I had been braiding hair since middle school as a hobby and decided that maybe being a hair dresser was something I should take a little more seriously. One day while I was working, I called the local beauty school near me and set up a tour. Need less to say I was enrolled the very same day and stared school about a week later. From there I stared documenting the styles that I would do on Instagram and slowly I started to gain clientele. After a few months I had built my clientele up enough to be able to leave my work from home job and focus on being a full time stylist and cosmetology student. When I was close to graduation I knew it was time to step it up a notch so I opened my own salon suite and Ny Did That was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to look at my work as art. Each and every client I work with is unique with that being said all of my canvases are different. With every style I like to tailor it to my clients individual head shape, hair texture and overall what would look best for and on them. I think by doing my work in this way it significantly sets me apart from my peers, especially in a money hungry field. Although the work I do is very lucrative, I don’t do it for that. I genuinely enjoy my career and I feel as though it shows through the work I produce. I care not only about the overall look of the style I also take pride in nurturing and growing out my clients hair under every style. I got to where I am today by treating each and everyone of my clients as if they are my only client. Of course it’s not “easy” , however nothing that is is truly worth it. There will always be an “off day” however I choose to use those “off days” as lessons as to how I can do better in the future. For example if I ever have a client who finds an issue with their style I communicate the best way that I can to ensure not only that my client is happy in the end but also comfortable expressing themselves if anything is ever not to their liking in the future. Id like the world to know that I’m not only an artist, but someone who truly cares about and enjoys working on each and every canvas brought to me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give he biggest shout out to my boyfriend of 6 years, Jaylon. He has been my biggest supporter throughout this entire journey. When he saw potential in my craft he encouraged me to follow my passion and take my dreams seriously. Throughout my cosmetology school journey I was gone for long hours with school and as my clientele grew we started having less and less time together. Throughout all of that he stood by and supported me as well as stepped into a more present role with our son in my absence.
