We had the good fortune of connecting with Paige Tonz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paige, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The reason I wanted to mentor girl athletes was because confidence was something I struggled with as an athlete growing up and even in college too. I was terrible at moving through and past my failures. I rode the waves of the ups and downs. I didn’t truly believe in myself or feel confident. I wanted that so badly. But, the self doubt just continued to overcome me. I didn’t actually feel real confidence until my senior year of college because I started to think differently. I went into my senior year play college softball with a new mindset. I told myself that I was going to have fun, do my best, and whatever happens, happens. What that meant to me was that I was going to finally let go of the results and just play. For me! I knew working on your mindset was key to success as an athlete, as a girl, as a woman, and in life! I knew I had to teach girls that came after me how to start thinking differently so they could step into their confidence.
What should our readers know about your business?
I mean… I get to mentor elite girl athletes. I have the best “job” in the whole world. And on top of that, it’s my very own business! I think the main thing that sets me apart is that I’ve been in these girls shoes. I know how they are feeling. What they are going through. I can relate to them so closely. I wouldn’t say it was easy. Leaving my “9-5 job” to pursue my passion was the scariest thing I have ever done. But, I surrounded myself with the right people who just kept telling me to take the next step. When I didn’t believe in myself, they did and that was a game changer. I have learned that mindset is everything. If you keep growing and keep working on what you think about, anything is possible. Consistency is key. Even the small steps. Little action every day. I want the world to know that my goal is for these girls to have the confidence to also know that they can do whatever they want in life. It gives me chills to think I get to be a small part of all these girls who are making a difference in this world already.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1. Rott n’ Grapes is my favorite little spot in Phoenix to grab bruschetta and happy hour! 2. Lake Pleasant Lake for a day trip to the lake on the boat. 3. A hike in West Wing and than Well Coffee in Peoria to catch up! 4. Carambas for margaritas! 5. Crossfit Incendia for a workout!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ah! This is the key to success here. There have been some incredibly pivotal people on my path and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. I truly believe that surrounding yourself with mentors will help you do the scary thing. Start the business. Follow your heart. I want to give a huge shout out to first, the women from The Packaged Deal. I still remember just getting out of college and just being in aw of what they had created for young softball players. I also want to give a huge shout out to my Crossfit Gym. It sounds kind of funny, but I have met so many crucial people in my life that have led me to where I am. The Laughton Team, Valentine Group, my soon-to-be husband, Amanda Walker, and so many more that have supported me and cheered me on. A special shoutout to Amanda Walker for being with me every step of the way to launching my very own business. She’s been such a huge support and mentor along the way. And lastly, my mom. She’s been there for me through all of it. Her support means so much to me.
