We had the good fortune of connecting with Pauline Jasmin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pauline, how do you think about risk?
When I think of risk I also think of reward, you could have them separately but I love it when they are served together. Risk-taking has greatly influenced my life’s development, creativity, and career. Looking back I know if I hadn’t taken a little risk I would have never gone after dreams like fire performance, jumping head first into an artist collective and following my creativity for fashion, and now running The Styles Shop off Grand Ave. Taking risks has pushed me to follow my heart and led me to know my soul has the power to succeed along the forever-evolving journey. There have been times when the high-risk high-reward way of life doesn’t work and I stand up, brush myself off, and think it’s just life, one step at a time. More often than not I raise my hands in achievement for the goals and opportunities I have accomplished this way and I thank my support system and the grit I have for being where I am in this lifetime.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Styles Shop is a wearable arts shop with a gallery wall that loves to activate community and collaboration. We have four resident artists in the shop and alongside we feature local artists as well. We love sharing our handmade and upcycled fashion pieces and teaching workshops to share our talents with all parts of the community. Every First Friday we host a DJ and muralists that do a takeover on our wall out front for the city to see for a month long feature. Our clothing drops motivate me to see a long-term goal with this space and those I collaborate with. I can’t wait for all to check out The Styles Shop and see our forever-growing fashion on the racks, art events, workshops, and fun art pop-up nights.

As an owner and fashion creator at The Styles Shop, I love being a seamstress and cutting slit-weave clothing for funky beings. I also install tinsel and hair jewelry, you can catch me occasionally with a can of paint in my hand. I am very excited to drop my next clothing line for y’all! I’ve come a long way from selling journals I would put my art drawings/paintings on to now holding space for the community and giving others the support to grow in their artistic journey. I love to utilize the shop to cultivate community and skill-share workshops. We just got wrapped up with a workshop-based exhibition show called Cultural Threads that was shared in a gallery down at The Arizona Center and can’t wait to do something that impactful again. Being able to use the shop in this way will pave the way to empower our community and create a stage for artists to stand on and share their work.

It hasn’t been easy but with the high-risk high-reward lifestyle I love but I knew it would all be worth it. I have been dreaming of the place where I am for almost 10 years now and it’s still a growing dream that’s coming true. Putting community building and personal goals for my fashion high on the list has been a huge motivation to go after such things and help others do the same. Some of the lessons I’ve learned would be to keep grinding those ideas and you will come up with something that will succeed. Your team is important because you could do it by yourself but it wouldn’t be what it is when you have an amazing team! Lastly, keep your chin up because life will go forward and there will always be better days, so don’t burn out.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie was coming to town we would have to hit up the following places when we go out on the town.
Things we would go do:
The Musical Instrument Museum! I can’t spend enough time there.
The Mesa Art Museum, has some of the best shows featured.
The Rock and Mineral Museum because of the knowledge they share.
Dance our hearts out on the dance floor at Walter and Techno Snobs shows.
Wednesday night at Encanto park for the juggling night they have by Mirage juggle club.
A trip to the Salt river for a yak adventure and lunch!

Places to go eat:
First an ice cold matcha at Noble Ground. The team is so sweet.
Testal for some amazing birria.
Romanelli’s for a sub is a must-do!
Giving Tree Cafe for some of the best vegan food in the valley.
Hot Sauce and Pepper because I can’t get enough of their cauliflower wings. (worth finding where they have the truck set up)
Walter Studios for the jazz night and dinner.
Grab some bomb pizza and wings from Snap Back Pizza on Grand
Ice cream from Novel Ice Cream. My favorite is a scoop of lavender and chocolate.

Places to hang out:
Walter Studios/ Where? House on the weekend for a sick show, dancing, and juggling. Can’t forget about seeing all the homies there!
Techno show at a secret venue because I love late summer nights and UK-style techno.
Bikini bar for their 602 days shows to dance and have the best pineapple upside down drinks.
Wayward Taphouse for a local craft beer and some funny sets for comedy night.
Fillmore afters to spin some fire.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my mom, community, and besties for their everlasting support and for egging me on when they knew I could do it! Without these people in my life, it would have been a landslide harder. I hope every being has a support system and encouragement like I do around. Thank you for always being excited to see what I am up to!

Being a part of Snood City Collective was a huge fuel to my fire! They were individuals who cultivated the same love for the community as I did and it showed with compassion and strength. Then getting to evolve the shop into Snood City Styles was a wild ride that challenged us to create fashion on top of what the collective already brought. I am so very grateful for each being in Snood for always being a mirror as well as such a rad supporting push to the goals as I could ever have in my life during large transformations. Currently, members of The Styles Shop bring the same love and energy to my heart. Thank you everyone who has ever frolicked with me on my path.
