We had the good fortune of connecting with Pop Stunna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pop, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“If the whole world believe in you and you do not believe in yourself, it will be difficult to achieve anything. However, if the whole world do not believe in you and you believe in yourself, you can always achieve anything”

While this resonates with me is because of how I grew up. Growing up, we did not have much of anything , and I lived in a place at at the time where there was almost no opportunity at all, no matter how talented or interesting you are. However, I believed in myself, since I was 8 years old and said I am going to find a way to get out of this situation and find success in life. That was all I had, there is no money, I barely ate complete meals or have anything bright or fancy to draw inspiration from, all I did was believe in myself and affirm to myself daily, that I will make it and someday this will be a thing of the past. It’s safe to say I can look back to my past and say yes, I am glad I believed in myself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As long as I can remember I have always wanted to be an artist. I have been writing poems since I was 6 years old and then started writing song at 13, so creating and telling stories with words have always been a passion of mine. Spending my childhood in Nigeria before I came to the United States is something that taught me a lot about life, because I saw a whole different reality that will sound like fairytale to most of my audience today. I think just coming from a humble beginning taught me the value of humility, hard work, and above all that passion that sets one apart .

I think that one of the main things that you will notice from my art that sets me apart from everyone else is my passion and dedication to my craft, I make music with a lot of heart and soul, and I make it in such a way that the songs I make creatively speaking is just unique to jus me alone. My new album “Good Riddance To Bad Love” contains lot of these elements I am talking about.

For me to be able to make art and be an artist was such a struggle, I did not know anyone, I did not have any money, and I was facing evictions every month. I had a job as a dishwater at a restaurant at the time, however, I was fired from my job as dishwasher for singing in the dish washing room . Instead of giving up on myself or play the victim, I went to the public library, taught myself computer science, learned how to make websites and fix computers and then I was able to raise enough money to procure studio equipment in order to make music. So it was not easy to create an enabling environment in life where I can focus and let my creativity shine through. It was not an easy journey but it has been worth it.
Being an adult and be able to say you are doing what you wanted to do since you were 8 years old, is a blessing I will never take for granted.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
For me my story was very unlikely considering where I came from and started life from. So I always believe God has a hand in it, and then my parents. I am blessed with amazing parents who in their little ways found a way to make sure I stayed on the right path mentally , and physically . And finally my great friends, I have always had great friends and I always tell myself that without my friends, my life would have been 10 times harder. So shoutout to all my great close friends that have been with me since the start of the journey.
