Meet Priya McCulloch | Interior Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Priya McCulloch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Priya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I reflect on my journey from working for someone else to entrepreneurship, the catalyst was witnessing the sacrifices many women made for their careers once they became mothers. However, amidst those sacrifices, I also saw a different narrative unfolding—the story of women designers who took the reins of their destiny by starting their own businesses, crafting their schedules to be present for their children while pursuing their passion.
This inspiring example became my guiding light. I made a firm decision that when the time came for me to embark on motherhood, I would also embark on entrepreneurship. I yearned to cherish every precious moment of raising my children while simultaneously nurturing a business that would not only make them proud but also serve as a beacon of empowerment and possibility.
I had the joy of nurturing my newborn alongside the exhilaration of nurturing my budding business. Balancing the demands of motherhood with the challenges of entrepreneurship became my daily reality. Yet, with determination and perseverance, I navigated this dual journey, learning the intricacies of business ownership while relishing the joys of parenthood.
My business journey unfolded gradually, on my terms, propelled by the power of word-of-mouth and referrals. What began as a modest endeavor soon blossomed into a thriving business. Through this process, I discovered a newfound appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, for the irreplaceable moments with my family, and for the boundless potential that comes with pursuing one’s passions. As I continue on this journey, I am reminded that by following our hearts and embracing our passions, we can truly live a life that resonates with fulfillment and joy.

What should our readers know about your business?
Throughout my journey, I’ve absorbed invaluable lessons. As I navigated the twists and turns of entrepreneurship, I continuously adapted and evolved, guided by what resonated with my inner compass. Turning your passion into a business makes you realize what your core values are.
Despite the challenges of juggling motherhood and business ownership, I resolved to maintain a home-based operation and not hire full-time employees so I can have flexibility with my time. Instead, I strategically enlisted contract help to handle various aspects of my business affording me time to focus on design.
Clients are drawn to me for my unique vision, talent and how I genuinely care about how they live in their homes. Helping people realize their design potential and help them live better and happier in their spaces brings me joy. My business grew more during the pandemic because people re-imagined their homes. Home is where memories are made and we are the best version of ourselves in the spaces that ease and inspire us. I infuse beauty, functionality, and soul into the places we call home, leaving an indelible mark on the lives I touch.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a deep appreciation for nature, and Tucson offers an array of breathtaking hiking trails. Some of my favorites include Sabino Canyon, Gates Pass, and Catalina State Park. When it comes to dining, I would undoubtedly recommend experiencing the best Mexican food at El Charro, Bk Tacos, or Mi Nidito, where they must try a Sonoran hot dog or carne asada tacos paired with a prickly pear margarita.
For a cultural and educational experience, I would take them to the Desert Museum, San Xavier del Bac Mission, Biosphere 2, the Old Barrio District, University of Arizona campus, Gaslight Theater, Kartchner Caverns, Pima Air & Space Museum, and downtown Tucson. These attractions offer a rich tapestry of history and entertainment that truly showcase the vibrant essence of Tucson. A day trip to Mt. Lemmon would also be fun to see the different landscape in the mountains.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe gratitude to my husband for enabling me to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams. His unwavering love, support and encouragement have been the cornerstone of my journey. Even when doubts crept in, he saw in me the grit and dedication needed to succeed. Without him by my side, starting my own business would have been an overwhelming challenge.
