We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Welch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, why did you pursue a creative career?
I can remember as young as age 3 working side by side with my Mother on her artwork, so I feel like art crept in as a child before I ever realized it. I was raised by a single Mother basically and she was a huge influence on me. She pushed the natural talent she saw in me from the start and never let me give up even when others had doubt.

Choosing a creative career seemed like a no-brainer for a long time. But once I had children I hit a crossroads. It was right about at the recession around 2008 when I decided to work as a Freelance artist for myself. For years I worked a 9-5 designing for dozens of companies, but year after year it became clear how much time I was away from what was most important to me, my family

So I took the leap and started my own design business and I couldn’t be happier. It allows me to follow my passions more by choosing what projects to take on, working in my own style and at my pace. I always used to think that choosing to become something “normal” such as a dental assistant or some other respectable job would be the easier route, but I know I’d be wasting my talent and not following my gift like my Mother ingrained in me when I was young. So I know I pursued my career because of her. Thank you Mom.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel like my art has evolved so much since I graduated art school in 2008. I know my skills have developed tremendously, and I am pretty proud to say this.

What sets me apart is that I am very good at taking a project from a tiny concept to a full and complete vision that my clients love. I feel like I am well versed in different styles from very feminine clothing design and logo concepts, to rigid construction design or custom vehicle illustrations. I do not limit myself with projects that I take on.

I am where I am today by building relationships, staying ontop of tasks, and keeping all of my clients and their projects number one priority.

I would like the world to know that choosing a design career isn’t always easy or fun, but it’s a 100% worth the risk, the feast or famine work load & sometimes long hours. Just knowing that I chose the right career for not only me, but for my family is everything.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is so easy for me, we love adventure and the outdoors. I live in Southern Utah right on the doorstep to the most beautiful country. I would take my best friend up in the mountains in our UTV and show her around Zion, Bryce Canyon and so many more beautiful spots in-between.

We would hike, take gorgeous pictures, fish, and I’d get her to crawl into dirty caves that she would totally fight me one but in the end laugh and love it all.

We would end each day sitting outside a cabin we rented watching the sunset and the summer monsoons rolling past.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As I mentioned before, I wouldn’t be who I am today without my Mother, Lisa Makowski (may she Rest In Peace). Next, I owe so much to my Husband Billy and my children Lisa and Reese, without their support and love, I would be lost.
