We had the good fortune of connecting with Shiv Shah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shiv, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?

In the long run, you should always keep going, but there are certain cases where giving up is actually braver and much tougher than going on.

Although I believe that pushing yourself to do your best should be something you strive for each day, sometimes things don’t work out how you want them to.

In those cases, I think it’s important to stop and reevaluate what you are doing and why that is happening. For me, I sometimes rather cut my losses and use my defeats as motivation to improve myself or do better because it can help you get more direction and learn more about what works for you in the business industry!

For example, when I was setting up my organization to sell t-shirts and merchandising, we decided eventually not to do it, even though I had spent hours and days researching and taking calls to learn more about the risks and value we would gain. We had little knowledge of how to set up the website, make accurate predictions, or haggle down the base cost. In the end, we did not do it because it made more sense to wait for later, where we will be more prepared and know what to do going in.
These compromises are always difficult since it is hard to admit that you can be wrong or it can feel like time wasted, but it’s always important to note that you will learn from it and you should keep pursuing your ambitions no matter how big they are.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hi, my name is Shiv Shah and I am currently a sophomore at Arizona State University and run the student organization the Sun Devil Stock Exchange!

I don’t truly believe that there is much of a difference between me or any other person besides the amount of effort I put into my work each day. I personally try to hold high standards for myself while also understanding that there will also be off days where I can’t always match my standards.

Of course, it is never easy to manage an entire organization, especially in its infancy. There were many things such as getting funding that required lots of paperwork, having to balance schoolwork, activities, and mental health, and also setting up our very own merchandise shop that all takes lots of time. Luckily for me, I have amazing officers that can help perform certain duties well and it showed me that trust is a very important quality in order to form something that is bigger than yourself!

Something else I learned was that there is a lot of risk management that you have to be willing to take on! It is not easy to start selling clothing that people may or may not buy, which might force you to be stuck with a big bill, but you need to be able to have enough faith and confidence in yourself that everything will turn out alright!

If there is one thing that I have learned along the way, it’s that in order to be able to make something great or to continually outdo yourself, you need to be able to organize a team and have them individually consider what they can do better themselves. If there are issues with your team, they often need to be resolved right, or else tension can weaken the overall success of what you are trying to do.

If there is one thing the world should know about me, it’s that I founded the student organization purely as a passion project because I was very into trading, and yet there was no presence of such an organization at such a large school. Finding that purpose and passion in creating a community overall has helped me a lot in continuing with the difficult tasks I have to do each day in order to improve and push ourselves to new heights.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Tempe, it really is one of the greatest cities just for its late-night ambiance! In the northwest part of Tempe, there is the downtown area, which has one of the greatest breakfast places, Snooze A.M Eatery, with amazing breakfast food.

A few miles away, there is also the Tempe Marketplace, which is an amazing shopping mall with lots of outdoor space, tons of shops, and a movie theater! It makes for a great time to visit especially during the evening. There are also many places to eat, but personally, for me, MOD Pizza is a go-to.

If Tempe Marketplace was great, then Arizona Mills will also be up your ally! There are tons of local shops and entertainment with lots of fun gimmicks such as Pepper Palace or Sea Life Arizona, or more shopping places such as the Nike clearance store and Vans Outlet store.

To close out your trip, enjoy a nice physical day by doing an early morning climb of A Mountain to watch the beautiful sunrise over the entire city, and close out the day by visiting Papago Park’s Hole in a Rock, where you can watch the sunset happen over Tempe’s skyline just from a short 5-minute hike!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to first thank my mom, dad, and grandma for their continual support and efforts in pushing me to always do better and keep getting to the next stages of my goals, however ambitious they may be.

I would also like to shout out my friends Abhinav, Kenneth, Simmy, and all the officers of the Sun Devil Stock Exchange for being a lot of fun to be around and also being great people to talk to!

Lastly, I’d like to dedicate this part to my older brother, Sham, for being a great role model to me for the past 19 years of my life. I really could not have been here without you!
