We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca and Hannah Leone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca and Hannah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We both moved back to the Black Hills after spending several years away, and neither of us really had a definitive career-direction we were headed towards. We slowly saw other craft food businesses opening with success in our community (breweries, restaurants, coffee shops) and wanted to be a part of that movement. Our combined passions/experiences from working in kitchens and bakeries led us down the path of ice cream, which was an unfilled niche in Spearfish at the time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At Leones’ Creamery, we make ice cream…and that’s pretty much it. Because of this, we are dedicated to providing a top-notch product and experience for our customers. We try to use local, seasonal ingredients often, and love collaborating with other Black Hills businesses to create unique flavors. Sometimes we don’t know exactly which of our new flavors will “take off” and it’s SO fun to see our customers get as excited as we do about or concoctions.

We hold ourselves to a high standard, both in the kitchen, and on the customer-service side of things. While we’re incredibly proud of the experience we can offer our customers, we’re even more proud of the community we’ve created around our business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Black Hills are an amazing, lesser-known, outdoor playground in the middle of the Great Plains. As sacred Native land, it’s full of rich, complex history, and a geologist’s dream. There’s so much to explore within our local Black Hills communities: hiking, biking, state parks, music festivals, wineries, breweries, and mom-and-pop businesses.

A Spearfish itinerary– begin your day with a coffee and pastry at Blackbird Espresso. Then, take a drive up the beautiful Spearfish Canyon (stop along the way at a number of hiking spots). Visit the waterfalls (Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls) in Savoy. Have lunch back in town at Antunez (guacamole here is a must) and walk downtown, and through our city park and fish hatchery. Rent a bike at Black Hills Bike Share, and do a brewery tour of our three local hot spots (Spearfish Brewing, Crow Peak Brewing, and Sawyer Brewing). Then, bike over to Dough Trader Pizza for an amazing sourdough pie. Top off your evening with a scoop from Leone’s Creamery and take in a summer live band.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
John Williams, Rebecca’s husband, was vital in getting the business out of our heads and onto the street. He also played an integral role in building relationships within our community, and continues to help with day-to-day maintenance and expansion projects.

Jane Leone, our sweet mom, gave us the foundation we needed to have confidence in the kitchen and ourselves. She is a constant cheerleader and our favorite critic.

Our community, Spearfish, SD, is the best place to call home. Our customers and friends have supported and embraced us since day one, and continue to inspire us in our creative and business ventures.
