We had the good fortune of connecting with Rikki Poynter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rikki, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
It has helped people become more knowledgeable about accessibility, from captions to image descriptions, their physical businesses/establishments, and more. People have become a little more aware about deaf people, disabled people in general.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since 2010, I’ve been on YouTube. I did my first 3-4 years as a makeup “guru” of sorts and then I switched niches to accessibility and disability, talking primarily about captions on YouTube and growing up as a mainstreamed deaf person who was trying to find her identity in a deaf community, language acquisition with ASL, etc.

Since 2015, I’ve been a public speaker. I’ve spoken at panels and workshops at various conventions as well as high schools/universities and businesses.

In the last few years, I’ve been an accessibility consultant for social media influencers, content creators, businesses, etc. Whether it’s online or offline. I help them make their online content and their physical events and businesses be as accessible as possible.

And somewhere in-between there, I’ve been writing for the longest time. Nonfiction, fiction. Articles for my local paper. Articles published on my own. Articles on Patreon. All of that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
(Charlotte, NC)

Wildroots Coffee for… coffee, obviously. I’m a sucker for their iced latte pouches.

Southend and NoDa are cute and fun places to hang out if you’re into the modern, hipster, and artsy type of areas.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thank you to everyone who has subscribed to the YouTube channel and watched videos, and Twitch (when I was streaming), followed on other social media. To everyone who has pledged on Patreon at one point or another. To everyone who came out to my public speaking events, and to anyone’s who hired me for anything.

Thank you to everyone who has made your video content more deaf friendly, and hasn’t stopped at all since they’ve started. You know who you are.
