We had the good fortune of connecting with Roberto Cordero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roberto, how do you think about risk?
Risk means taking a chance, trying something new, and possibly failing or succeeding, but we have to experience risk in our lives. Taking chances is one of the most crucial ways of helping to level up our skills and career path. I know that without taking risks, it would have been impossible to achieve success and reach my full potential. A lot of people think that self-confidence is the key to taking risks, but I don’t believe that’s always the case. You’re not more likely to take risks because you think you can’t fail. It’s actually more about having confidence in the outcome. You know that even if things don’t go right, you have the resources to manage failure. In my life and career, I’ve taken risks that were calculated, and I’ve also taken some risks that purely came from a gut feeling. More often than not, going in the direction that I felt compelled towards has worked out pretty damn well. I don’t like regrets. I don’t like to hold back. If anything – my life and all the success to date is a testament to staring risks in the face, giving it the middle finger, and then doing what I felt urged to do anyway.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Pure determination and passion – that’s what got me to where I am. Being a full time artist, when looking from the outside in, can seem glamorous: setting your own hours, working from home, doing only what you want/love, living the dream! In actuality being a full time artist is very challenging. Like any other small business, artists are under a huge amount of pressure to produce and make enough money from their creative product to survive and support themselves. Artists work very long hours, often seven days a week to produce work. But the life of a creator is not just physically challenging, It is also a mental and emotional process. I always advise anybody who is creating a path for themselves, to make sure you are not only doing the business/creative work, but you also are putting in time for the inner work. Practice patience, practice gratitude, and practice mindfulness. This will go a long way. Sharing this with you was not intended to scare you. Because nothing truly special is brought into the world without some pain and struggle. Sharing this is my way of acknowledging that the struggle is real, and my way of expressing my respect for all living artists, I see you, I hear you and I appreciate your struggle! Keep pushing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m currently staying in the heart of Phoenix, downtown. The season and overall energy of the day would determine the activities. I would start with an early hike at my favorite spot, Piestewa Peak, which is about 3,000 feet to the top. The views of the city are insane. After, I would hit up a brunch spot in Downtown; preferably Morning Squeeze or Breakfast Club. If the vibe is to experience the nightlife, I would stay on Roosevelt Row and check out Champang Lanes, Pemberton, and Killer Whale. Such vibey aesthetically pleasing spots with great drinks/food. Like I said, the week trip itinerary would come down to overall feel and what that person enjoys doing. If you’re into the art scene, Phoenix Museum and First Fridays (1st Friday of the Month) in Downtown would be the time and place for you.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Major shoutout to my parents and loved ones. They always believed in me, trusted me, and supported my decisions about my career/journey; even when I made some risky moves. Thanks to that, I have always been self-confident, knew what I wanted from the very beginning, and I never felt lost. I had no choice but to execute on my plans and make it work.
