We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Kemmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Being creative makes me happy. Creativity is a powerful force that inspires people to think outside the box. Ultimately I think creating, regardless of the medium it is done in, has a special ability to open peoples minds and change the world for the better. Also, being creative is fun! There is nothing better than spending an afternoon working on something you find interesting, or something that will inspire others. For me, my favorite things are writing music and developing software.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For nearly my whole life I’ve been a drummer. I started my first band in seventh grade and have been playing in bands ever since. Drums are a unique instrument because you almost always get to play and create with other people. This has allowed me to play and learn from many very talented musicians, who have shaped me into who I am today. Sometimes as a drummer, you also just get pulled into things because people need drummers, but they are in such short supply. This makes my life very fun. I have had super spontaneous musical experiences, such as playing with a Gospel Choir only having 2 hours notice to learn the music before the concert started. Aside from playing drums, I also produce music, play piano, and sing. For the last few years, my primary focus has been playing drums, singing, and producing for Natural Flavors, an indie rock band based out of Tempe Arizona. We are all good friends and make music for fun. However, I think we have something very special that could one day turn into something bigger. We are about to release our first album in 2021! I make music to bring positivity into the world. When I was younger, I felt like I would make music as a way to pass time. As I have grown, I have learned that ultimately music is a way to make an audience feel something special. My goal is to make music that brings people joy, and that brings people together. In such a divided world, I think we need that more than anything.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Easy. There are so many great things to do in Southern Arizona. Personally, I really like it here because of the incredible Sonoran Desert that surrounds the city. When I have friends visit from out of town, I usually like to take them down to Tucson to see Sabino Canyon, which has breathtakingly beautiful desert views. I also would take them to Papago Park just north of Tempe, which is a cool hidden nature spot within the engulfing city of Phoenix. For food, I think Tacos Jalisco in Scottsdale is superior. Also, you can never go wrong with Fate Brewing Company or Postino for an afternoon of hanging out with friends.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten a lot of support and mentorship over the years. I attribute a lot of my work ethic to my high school percussion teacher Dr. Tina Walton. She is an incredible person who really inspired me to get serious about being creative and making an impact on the world. Also, I am super thankful for my family and friends who are always there to support me.
