We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrea Kuderer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
SIMPLE IN NATURE was originally created in 2015 because of a project for a business class I was taking. We were allowed to create whatever we wanted which was super exciting for me. I had always dreamed of being an entrepreneur but was too nervous to take the leap. I have been a lover of all things natural for over 20 years and knew I wanted to be in the skincare realm. I started experimenting with various products and fell in love with the entire process. After going through the project, I decided I was going to start the business as a side hustle, but after getting pregnant with our second kiddo and having an extremely demanding career, I decided to put it on the back burner. I continued to make products for myself, my family and friends, perfecting my formulas and scent combinations. Fast forward to March of 2020 when everything shut down. I was laid off from my long time career in the live entertainment industry. I was devastated emotionally and the thought of starting over in a new career just didn’t sound appealing. After weighing all the pros and cons with my husband, we agreed that now was the right time for me to go all in on my business. It has been nonstop ever since!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started SIMPLE IN NATURE with the idea that high quality organic skincare products can be affordable and effective. For years I was buying products that were great, but were so expensive. I just couldn’t justify spending the money. I knew I could make products as good, if not better, and not have to charge such high prices. I started formulating organic soaking salts, sugar scrubs, and body oils. Over time I’ve added in other products to the lineup that compliment the original core line, such as lip scrubs, perfume roll ons, and an intimacy oil. What sets my products apart from countless others is that I formulate utilizing 99% organic ingredients and only those necessary to make the products effective. I often say “it’s everything your skin needs and nothing it doesn’t, the way mother nature intended.” I truly believe in the importance of developing a consistent routine to ensure we are taking care of our skin to maintain its optimal health.
Prior to starting the business, I was in the Consumer Products division for a large live family entertainment company. I had been employed by the company for 20 years, working my way up from the bottom. It really gave me a huge leg up when starting my own business. I came into this with an understanding of profit margins, pricing, inventory management, visual merchandising, etc. Without this previous experience I know my journey would have been even more challenging. Despite all my knowledge coming into the business there are still plenty of lessons to be learned when you are the sole person making all the decisions and doing all of the work. I am most proud of how we have evolved and grown in such a short period of time. We have added new products to the lineup and went through a whole rebrand. While not easy, everything that has come up has been a needed and a positive change.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My business is based in the La Crosse, Wisconsin area but I have spent a fair amount of time in Arizona through all of my years traveling. I would seek out the best spots for coffee, breakfast, tacos, and of course cocktails. The only necessities I need! As for things to do, I would want to take advantage of all the hiking and just taking in the views in general. There are so many beautiful places to go within just a few hours of the city that you could never get bored with mini road trips! Painted Desert anyone?
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my bestie Maureen Morrison! From the very beginning she believed in what I was doing. In the early stages she and I would have a daily video chat to discuss anything and everything related to the business. She has much more of an understanding of marketing than I do so she really helped me work through a plan for social media. On the days when I thought I wasn’t good enough she reminded me of my worth. She always has words of encouragement and never doubts what I am capable of even when I can’t see it in myself at times.
My husband Jason also deserves an enormous shoutout! He has never doubted my ability from day one. He was willing to take the chance on me so I could bring this business to life. Without his support there is no way that I could be where I am at today. I am forever grateful!
