We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Miller-Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Culture and Environment. It’s nice to walk into the salon each day knowing it’s a judgement free zone; not only to each other as co-workers, but to our clients as well. We are a team that welcomes and accepts everyone. This quality does not come easy it’s something we work on together in team meetings, team building activities and individually. We don’t do things out of fear and fear of judgment and acceptance. The more you trust those around you the more you can accomplish and grow.

I currently own two businesses in the hair and makeup industry, Babydoll Hair Salon and Babydoll Weddings located in Mesa, AZ. I am also a Level 2 Educator for the brand L’ANZA and have the pleasure traveling all over to teach other salons and stylists. Babydoll Hair Salon specialize in scene-stealing looks from hair coloring and trendy balayage highlights to cutting-edge haircuts. Five types/methods of hair extensions, perms, straightening treatments and waxing. We are committed to making each client happy while educating them in the newest and hottest styles suited for their face shape and lifestyle. We don’t believe there’s a need for beauty secrets, only tricks of the trade that should be shared so you can maintain your new fabulous look even after leaving the salon. Our amazing stylists receive ongoing training by industry leaders from around the world by attending hair shows and continuing education classes. Our common goal is to maintaining a worthy reputation for quality services. What set’s our salon apart from others is our true family dynamic. We are a family that works hard and plays hard together. You will not find negative energy here – we are a group of women who try to empower each other as well as our clients. Our sister company Babydoll Weddings is comprised of some of the most talented freelance stylist in Arizona. We are dedicated to providing bridal hair and makeup services for weddings, engagement photos and special events in Arizona. Babydoll Weddings travels and serves brides all over the state of Arizona. We have a dedicated Beauty Liaison that manages the brides services and ensures they are matched with a stylist that is best suited for them and they look they want on their special day. Our mobile makeup artists and wedding hairstylists take the time to discuss your bridal beauty vision and help you decide what the best look will be for your wedding day. We want to make sure that on the day of your wedding, as a million and one things race through your mind, you can relax knowing that no matter what happens, you look gorgeous. What sets this company a part from others is that we require all our stylists to possess a license in cosmetology or aesthetics. Currently in the state of Arizona you do not have to be licensed to do makeup or style hair, however we feel education and experience is necessary to deliver the best work and customer service.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Entertaining is my thing! I love talking and showing people all the great local bars and restaurants Arizona has to offer. Day 1: Arrive and go have brunch at Hash Kitchen. Then go have a little retail therapy at the Phx Outlet Shops. Nap and then dinner drinks at The Hidden House in Chandler. Day 2: Morning hike in San Tan Valley, then head over to the Olive Mill for some amazing food, tour of how olive oil is made and relax outside with their almond sparkling wine. Before heading home stop at the Pork Shop and pick up some amazing meat to head home and grill or smoke and enjoy the Arizona night on the patio. Day 3: Morning hike, The Wind Cave at Usery Pass. Then head up for breakfast at the Saguaro Lake restaurant – great views right on the lake. Head home to shower and head to Phoenix to spend time at the Science Center, MIM or Phx Zoo. Night time grab amazing food and drinks at Durants in Phx. Day 4: Start the morning in Tempe at Snooze for breakfast, rent some bikes or scooters and enjoy Tempe Town Lake. Have snack and play some corn hole at Culinary Dropout. Make your short way to Downtown Mesa and enjoy walking through many of the antique shops while enjoying and supporting many of the new breweries and businesses .For drinks: Cider Corps, Oso Brewery, Chupacabra Taproom, 12 West. For food: Worth Takeaway, 12 West. Day 5: Roadtrip time. Hop in the car and head up to Sedona. Devils Bridge Hike, Holly Cross Church, Oak Creek Brewery and just drive around and look at the beauty. Day 6: Wake up to the amazing Red Rock views and head to the Coffee Pot for breakfast and now that your tummy is full….time for some wine! Paige Springs, Javelina, Alcantara are all great wineries in the Sedona area. Head up to Jerome at eat at the Haunted Hamburger – walk around and buy some amazing art and jewelry from local artists. Continue the back roads and head over to Prescott…beautiful drive! Day 7: Walk up in the amazing pines of Prescott (originally Arizona’s capital). Stroll through downtown and walk around there’s always a car show, craft show or something going on in the square. Take a ghost tour and check out Superstition Meadery and Farm Provisions for food and drinks. REAPEAT! OR STAY LONGER, THERE’S MUCH MORE TO DO! 🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Parents and Husband for sure! It was not easy to look at my Dad’s disappointed face when I decided to quit Corporate America, no longer use the college degree he paid for and enroll in beauty school. It was also not easy to ask the “boyfriend” (now husband – whew!) If he’d be okay basically not seeing me for 1 year while I work full time days and go to school at night. They have always supported me. Who knew that leap was what I needed and for the past 10 years I LOVE what I do. I get to cherish the memories of my Dad literally building my salon for me. You see, in our family we call him, MacGyver, he knows how to do and fix almost anything. For three months my Dad, friends and family helped paint, drywall, sweep, move furniture, etc in order for me to take a shot at a dream of owning my own Salon. Yes owning a business can be stressful, but it’s also so rewarding. It’s my child – I feed it, nurture it and hope I’m making the right decisions for it to continue to grow and run on it’s own.
