We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started my first job at a corporate salon my plan was to always work in a salon for someone else. Starting my own business seemed like a daunting task that would lead to working on my own time and I very much just wanted a job that I could clock in and out of. But over time I started to realize that the flexibility of being able to create my own schedule rather than working until 9-10 pm every night was becoming more and more appealing so when a friend of mine moved into a suite I decided to take the plunge and join her!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in haircolor and especially love to do color corrections. There is just something wonderful about fixing hair that someone was unhappy with and giving them hair that they love instead!
I also have a lot of integrity in my work. When I make a mistake I always always point it out myself to the client and then fix it for them. I do believe that sets me apart from a lot of other stylists but I also know that being able to own and fix your own mistakes comes with time.
Time is also how I got to where I am now. Experience really is the best teacher in both technique and business. It hasn’t always been easy… there have been unhappy clients, unexpected expenses, dishonest business partners, and just about everything else you can think of to contend with along the way but the best way to handle a challenge is head on. Every time a challenge presented itself I just simply worked through it and came out on the other side better and wiser.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I live in the desert so it really depends on the time of year. I know the summers here are hot and impossible to deal with but as a storm chaser I love monsoon season! If it were late July or August I would spend our days visiting different water parks or going up north to cooler weather during the day and we would go storm chasing in the late afternoon and evenings! In a perfect world we would go somewhere with a gorgeous view like the Mogollon Rim and set up some cameras and watch the storms go up.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I will always shout out my stepdad when talking about my career because without him I never would have been able to start. He made sure I was able to go to school when I wanted to despite the lack of support from other members of my family. Forever grateful to Glenn!
