We had the good fortune of connecting with Sebastian Vargas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sebastian, why did you pursue a creative career?
It is hard to say why I decided to pursue a creative career in a logical or financial sense. If anything, it was an intuitive decision when I first felt that time was moving faster than usual in my adolescence. I knew I would need to narrow down on who I wanted to be in my life and it was not going to be anything I portrayed myself to be in my past life.

I was eighteen when I decided to pursue art seriously. Unfortunately, it didn’t get the best reception from everybody that was in my life at that time, but the lack of encouragement is what fueled me the most I would say. The awkward sit down conversations with others asking “Why are you doing this?” and “How are you going to do it?” all were followed with my answer “I don’t know, but I’ll figure it out.” and that’s exactly what I did/still do when accepting change in my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Overall, a lot of my work is inspired by personality. I always try to get to know others well before I pursue new projects no matter what the objective is. Even with the most simple practices I find a lot of value in getting to know others before we decide to work together or before I get recruited to be apart of a pursuit bigger than myself. Building that trust with others as an individual is a factor not be overlooked. I feel that is what separates me most from others. The trust.

It was not easy getting to my current position. The challenges were mainly just inner adversity. Accepting a lot of loss within myself, but at the same time I never wanted those moments of self-conflict to fully define me. I recognize adversity did mold me to become a better individual, but I would not want my journey or myself to be remembered as an existential shadow of the world.

I create out of love, so it would not make much sense to have such a dim narrative or pessimistic outlook, especially in regard to events I cannot control. Just narrowed down on what’s important and inspiring to me even if it takes a bit of detachment from others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to visit the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever I would honestly just take them to all of the local events I go to from time to time such as Pickers Playground, Dusk Market, and other pop-ups in the art scene of Downtown Phoenix. When looking for a great spot there’s no doubt I would take them to Bacanora. Food is phenomenal, staff is attentive and kind. Great environment. I would keep it all local and personal if they wanted to step into my world for a weekend.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents and my extended family. I would also like to dedicate my shoutout to my closest friends these past few years. There’s a good list of names, but when reading this they will know who they are. Finally, I dedicate this to my mentor, Melissa Button, who saw a spark in me far before I could ever see it.
