We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawnny Alexandra Roman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawnny Alexandra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

I pursued an artistic career at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts of Scottdale because I developed a passion for cooking at a young age but, it all stemmed from ask my mom for her recipes because I thought she was the best cook ever. Really.

I would also get a lot of positive feedback from family and friends. I soon found out that there was my potential for growing and being creative in the kitchen because nothing else made me happier than to make people happy with food. It was always gratifying, but in a humble way. My passion grew and grew, watching the food channel and dreaming of being a “Chef” one day just like them. Well, that changed over the years as I “matured” and grew in other ways, thankfully. My creativity shifted after many years of intricate kitchen prep and many kitchen “roles”. Curiosity for endless foods/recipes and always making my version of things is my jam!

When something excites you so much and makes you feel like you are not working rather but in a flowing and happy state of mind, that is when you know you are doing the right thing. That is how Blissful Boards came to life. It is a combination of all abilities and techniques acquired throughout my culinary and artistic years. And not to mention a lot of lessons.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My charcuterie boards, spreads and small bites are the best way to get creative in a lot of ways. I get to showcase exactly who I am and invite you into my world of flavors and visual beauty and versatility.

I was inspired in a lot of ways but one of them in particular is that every time I found myself in the kitchen it was very therapeutic. I believe in energy and food nourishment/transfer, so to be able to transfer that energy in a good way you need to be calm, create and cook from a loving and positive state of mind and space. I will never cook angry!

What sets my Art apart from others is the passion behind each component of every dish I make. I take huge pride in my culinary education and hold myself up to higher standards just like in any high level kitchen because I was trained by Master Chefs. I also combine other tools and life skills into my art that are not necessarily culinary based.

Just like life always has its twists and turns, so do culinary paths and that means I knew it would take a lot of physical and mental strength to become very good at what I do.  Not just good, great but most importantly inspiring to many young adults.

Also, what was very important, was having great leaders that were willing to help and guide me in the right direction. Always! I always asked questions and got very good at wanting to be on top of it and was always drawn to be a leader in a kitchen space but in a positive way.

I had a few chef bosses that took me under their wing and truly believed in me so that helped shape my culinary path. Of course there were many obstacles and downfalls but that is part of it all and thanks to those downfalls, Blissful Boards was born.

It is important to learn how to overcome your challenges with grace and acceptance and always find yourself in a space of growth. If your workspace is not making you happy, you have to ask yourself if you are willing to put in the hard work for what you truly love and master something shorter term than you would working in the same negative space long term?
Everything you do in this world will have it’s ripple effects. Be a positive change and share yourself with the world!

Blissful Boards is about sharing love and art through food nourishment and positive environment. Please share this with any food lovers or anyone starting a small food business with a passion!  No matter how small you start, you will evolve quicker than you know. You need to trust yourself and the universe and just keep going!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take anyone up to Sedona, Arizona and get a spectacular view of the Red Rocks! Definitely check out Chocolatree. I find it nice to get out of the big cities! There are a lot of fun outdoor activities to engage in with friends and fam with the best views in the world! Spring or Fall are the best months to go for beautiful weather. If you love snow, go during the winter for a winter wonderland experience!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I would like to express my most loving gratitude to my daughter Jennifer Nuñez for being my greatest teacher in life and being the best role model. You have been my motivation to never give up! Thank you for believing in me! I would like to give a special thanks to my mother & father for inspiring and instilling delicious foods in me, but also for showing me discipline and great work ethic.
A very special thanks to a couple of my Culinary Mentors from Le Cordon Bleu. Chef Jon Paul Hutchins, thank you for your understanding and knowing in each student you mentor. You have and continue to make a great impact on us young Chefs.
Another special thanks and shoutout to my tribe and also Jason Chacon for always standing beside me.
And last but not not least, my beautiful dance instructors from Fred Astaire Awahtukee for being such a wonderful example of perseverance and amazing positive energy!
