We had the good fortune of connecting with Shem Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shem, what principle do you value most?
My values are what drive my music career. Not only do I love doing concerts and tours, I love sharing my faith! There’s something about the mixture of Hiphop and Jesus that fuels my excitement! It makes it feel like it is more than just music, but it’s changing lives as well. I don’t want to be another rapper that talks about money, sex and drugs. I want to talk about life. So my values are the foundation of what I do.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a Christian hip-hop artist definitely presents many challenges. There are many who do not want to hear about what I believe in. Nor do I feel the need to judge anybody. My music is written, and designed to encourage and invite my listeners into a relationship with Jesus. My songs are about addiction, depression, mistakes that I’ve had to learn from. In hopes that somebody out there doesn’t feel alone. That’s all I care about. But no worries we are going to turn up while we do it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If your hanging out with me and we are getting food? I hope you like raw fish! Because I’m definitely getting some Poke. Sushi, or Asian food. My favorite places in Tucson are Pure Poke, Azian, and China Phoenix.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my wife Meltia Taylor. She is my rock and my encouragement! Also Tha Mash Unit! Not just because they are my record label, but because they are my family. Without them I couldn’t do what I do and be successful.
