Meet Shylia Revier | Licensed Massage Therapist, Licensed Esthetician, Permanent Makeup Artist, & Reiki Master

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shylia Revier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shylia, how do you think about risk?
Jump! Take the leap! Without risks, how do we know if there is a reward? I started my business during the height of COVID19. I opened June of 2020, scared out of my mind, sure I would fail. Who in their right mind would want a massage or a facial during the height of a global pandemic? The answer was shocking, I was booked solid within a couple weeks. Risks seem scary, but it’s the thought of failing that is truly scary. If we do fail, we can try again, it is not the end. If I wouldn’t have taken the risk, I wouldn’t have had opportunity to fail, but I would have also denied myself the opportunity to succeed. I can’t imagine where I would be now if I didn’t take the risk of opening my spa.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Hideaway Spa is built around our employees. Without them we wouldn’t be here today. Each and every one of the girls and guys on our team is who we are at our core. My father owned a small business and I spent a lot of time working with him. From a very young age he made sure I understood “happy employees=better business”, and I will never let that go. I have worked for many high end spa’s who made me feel undervalued. I have had my pay cut for missing work due to family emergencies or sick children. As a full time mother of 3, this isn’t realistic for me or any other mothers/fathers out there. I feared loosing my job when my children, or myself became sick. This isn’t healthy, this isn’t what our industry is about. It’s about holistic care, meaning we take care of our “whole” self. When my business partner and myself first went into business together, I was very firm on not docking employees for having a life outside of work, and my partner agreed 100%. We encourage time off, even for mental health. This industry is physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually taxing. I never enjoyed being treated like a number, I am human, I am not a robot. When we interview and hire our employees I tell them right away, if you’re sick, call off. If you are having a rough day, you are not feeling the love, if you have a bad attitude; call off! Family emergency, call off! Need a vacation? Already have one planned? Well, our employees have full control of their schedule and we tell them to block it off and give us a heads up so we can properly shift clients as needed. Our employee turnover rate is low, as our employees love the flexibility. I understand not all companies can operate this way, and we may adjust it in the future. However, our number one concern is always our staff. They are not just employees, they are family and we love and support them as if we have had them in our family from the day we were born. We all love coming to work, when we are sick or on vacation, we make sure to let each other know we truly miss each other and can’t wait to see them again. In fact, one of our girls is out right now for surgery and we miss her so much. The spa truly isn’t the same without her. The joy of working with us shines through in all of the services provided and our clients take note of the upbeat vibe and constant positive energy. We have built a spa family and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You can’t come by our spa without smelling the bakery, Baked In Pinetop, so you must stop there before you even get into your car to leave. They have the best pastries and fresh baked bread around.
Berties Cafe is a great spot for handmade donuts or a hot breakfast.
Arizona Mountain Coffee is my number one coffee shop stop for all my drink needs, from coffee, to tea, Thai milk, chia tea, and even fruit smoothies. The House is the best place for a hot meal and nightly entertainment, they often have corn hole and other games for patrons to enjoy before or after their meal, all while sipping down a nice cold beer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, I’d like to thank my father. He has instilled a good work ethic in me, and taught me that valuing the people who built your business will only make it grow further. Thank you dad, for all the sacrifices, the sleepless nights, the long walks, and the advice, thank you and I love you to the moon and back. To my mother, thank you for everything you have done and continue to do not only for me, but for my children as well. You are the best mother I could have ever asked for, you have showed me how to be strong, loyal, and dedicated to my craft through your unwavering dedication to your daughters. I love you. To my husband, I wouldn’t have this spa if it wasn’t for you seeing the light in me, which I often fail to see myself. You have stood by me, encouraged me, and supported me through this journey and I can’t thank you enough, I love you. Lizzy Page, you were the model esthetician I strived to become. Your charisma, your class, your sass, always on point and always pouring your soul into everything you do. As my friend, my sista, you have watched me grow from a brand new massage therapist and esthetician, to a business owner and have supported me while standing by my side and from miles away. Thank you! Bianca, Bee, I can’t put into words the role you have played in my life and continue to play, girl you know. I love you. Felicia Rush, you are the friend who I needed to self reflect, the friend I need to change for the better, you are my soul sister and I thank you for continuing to be there for me, even from the other side of the country. Annisa, for being my matching half to our business, I never thought I’d find another professional to balance out the business the way we have, I love you girl!
